First decent distance drive.

Post by DiscoPol »

In preparation for my summer hols and the fact that me and the mrs have been spliced for 5 years next weekend i decided to head out for the weekend with just the wife, we had a run down to wroclaw in the south of poland, nice old town square and plenty of restaurants and so on for us to fill our faces get smashed and generally remind ourselves what was like just being married not parents

So booked hotel packed the little fella off to granny and away we went, well the route was picked by the cars sat nav predicted at 5 hours, with traffic and roadworks everywhere it wasnt looking good until we got about 200km away from warsaw and the roads started to really quieten down, some lovely long runs with minimal traffic and very few "foto-radar" cameras the C5 was stunning, some really nice hi speed runs on the few stretches of "motorway" and plenty of long sweeping bends on the smaller roads.

Sum total of distance covered 684km, average speed 79kmh, consumption 7.2l/100km (39.2mpg) all done with the A/C on all the time and sadly in pissing down rain for most of the drives too, 4 hours 10 mins on the way there and 4 hours dead on the way back, it all bodes well for the holidays, we arent planning on doing more than 7 hours at a time between hotels and so on and after 4 hours today i felt refreshed and ready to do another 4 hours no problem, the seats are really comfy and the back massager actually is more than just a gimmick it really does help.

Should be interesting to see how she performs coming through germany as today she had no problem pootling along at 190kmh +

I would say it is good, on any other type of road i think you could say it was in a class of its own but it has so much to contend with here that its an impossible ask for any car to deal with it perfectly.

It was certainly comfortable and an effortless drive i felt refreshed and ready to go again after 4 hours each way, i reckon i could happily do europe in one go in it, but i will have the family on board so the stops are more for them than me, when i did europe in the 406 i did about 12 hours at a go without too much pain and discomfort, when in the disco i did 16 hours non stop and i wasnt sore just deaf, with the C5 i reckon 20 hours is do-able with enough red bull and coffees. Thats end to end in theory :cheesy:

If you're going to do a long distance drive, a big Citroen is a fine weapon of choice.

Remember my Xantia, London (to pickup) to Edinburgh (to meet pals) was effortless!

the 406 isnt too bad at the long distance cruise stuff either, get it on the motorway set the cruise control and its quite nice. Although id say your c5 is even better, with a bit of punch to keep audi drivers away.
on the topic of citroens i seen my first of the new c4 today, the place i work got one as a company car, cant wait to get a mini test drive round their yard, but it seems like a nice car but this one is black without any chrome, and black wheels some may not call this a problem but it didnt look flashy enough, they definatley are trying to imitate the golf.

406 was grand for last years epic Belfast -> Silverstone trip via Milton Keynes, Manchester and Wigan.
Never got out feeling overly tired, even without cruise control.

New C4 I think isn't as distinctive as the old C4. Old C4 3 door looked very Citroeny.
Saw a ZX today and had fond memories. Almost offered him a few hundred for it lol

the problem with the c4 i seen was whatever way it had been specced all the chrome bits were black and the chrome bits in the press photos i had seen until then were what defined the shape of the c4, but its still a big step forward over the old one very solid feeling, although it has replaced a distinctive old model, the renault megane also replaced a distinctive looking old model. And now the new c4 and megane if you didnt concentrate you might mistake each one, especially the rear view.

Very good point Farmerpug.
Distinctive design that gets watered down. Same with the Laguna, and possibly the Mondeo. Everyone trying to make their car a little more generic.

Good to hear the new girl is living up to expectations disco !!

Talking about long distance driving think about this one , some years ago
i worked for a company that did regular deliveries to Germany , if there was a hold
up in production they sometimes sent a 3.5t sprinter with a short load to keep the
factory in germany going till the truck could get there . Used to leave congleton
in cheshire about 4 in the afternoon and have to deliver in Dachau before 10am
the following morning and that included rail or ferry crossing  let you work that one out !!
i used to be fooked when got there
.. ooh are those drugs for me Matron

Holy feck - that's a long drive to do in that space of time. Would be much easier if you were coming from London, but from the North - ouch!

Glad to hear the C5's going well!

Did my first long distance drive on Saturday in my Focus since I had all new front suspension fitted. Going back and fore Castle Combe for the RS Combe show (great day out :D_.
Twas lovely to be able to cruise at 'motorway speed's without the car wandering and shuddering
But the seats give me back ache, the accelerator seems to be in totally the wrong position, I couldn't get comftorble on the steering wheel and the bloody wind noise! :| Erghh

Had a run from Aberdeen to Glasgow Airport and back yesterday - a round trip of about 320 miles. Wifely Person has just returned from her trip home to Indonesia. Brilliant weather; clear blue skies, sun shining, temperatures between 20 and 30 Celsius (yes, in Scotland!) all the way. Sunglasses on.

The Coupe was absolutely faultless; big comfy seats, laid back driving position, cruise control on, music playing (I got my Sony head unit to work through the JBL amplifier, sounds amazing). She can accelerate quite aggressively if needs be; still feels like she's got a fair amount of power for overtaking even at 70 MPH in 5th gear. She's good on corners too, as the chassis seems quite firm, but handles the bumps in the road very well also. Brilliant long-distance cruiser, and not too heavy on petrol either - I still have just under half a tank left, having brimmed the tank on the way out of Aberdeen that morning.

When we got back to Aberdeen that evening, I was driving down Wellington Road and stopped at a set of traffic lights, right at the top of the hill. A Nissan GT-R pulled up next to me. The lights turned green and I was quicker off the line than he was, which pissed him off no end - I must have got about 100 metres down the hill before he decided "f*ck it" and he must have passed me doing 100 MPH (this is a 40 zone), still accelerating. Was quite a funny moment, I had a good laugh. Though I think I'd have laughed harder if there had been a police car taking notice...
