New addition to the household
Finally got rid of the Ford, and replaced it with this. We are now an all- 'H' household

Is that an Amica?
I've had lots of problems with blowing brake light bulbs on those (they have 4) keep a good stock of bulbs
Make sure you keep the front brake pads free in the calipers, especially the left hand, they squeak like crazy if they are slightly sticky.
Had fan belt screeches a lot with these too, it must be really tight or it squeals when first setting off from cold.
The alternator is coded to the ECU on these so beware of the charge light coming on....you won't be able to fix it yourself...dealer only
Having said all that, if it is the Amica they aren't a bad car.

Re: New addition to the household
It's a Getz. Never thought I'd be looking at one to be honest, but it doesn't seem to drive too badly.
Surprised the Alternator is a dealer job
The manual has a section on DIY maintenance, taking you through oil changes, plug changes etc.
I did laugh at the manual though, there is a small cubby hole, the manual says something like
"There is space for receipts of CD case or moneys"
Almost sounds like a gumtree advert

they should be a reliable wee car but what sort of ford did it replace? What is your opinion on the interior?

It replaced a Fiesta. Was OK but things like the alternator and idle control valve going at 35k didn't inspire confidence.FarmerPug wrote:they should be a reliable wee car but what sort of ford did it replace? What is your opinion on the interior?
The interior of the Getz is a little plasticy, I've noticed things like exposed screwheads in the door handles.
But then, the honest basicness is a breath of fresh air and reminds me of the Felicia I learnt to drive it. It does have leccy windows and a CD player as standard.
And should be easy to take apart, they use phillips screws, not PSA-style torx bits

the first time i was presented with a torx head on a 205 i hated it because i had no torx bits but now i do i think they are the way to go, there is no cam out so the bits and screws last much longer.

Yea I was the same on the Xantia (I don't remember any on the ZX, but then maybe because it needed so little work done to the XUD other than routine servicing I never noticed), but now I have boxes of torx bits!FarmerPug wrote:the first time i was presented with a torx head on a 205 i hated it because i had no torx bits but now i do i think they are the way to go, there is no cam out so the bits and screws last much longer.
I did strip the head off a torx screw on the idle control valve of the Xantia, but luckily got it out and replaced it with a phillips.

Re: New addition to the household
when i broke that 406 earlier in the year i had some shite torx bits out of a pound shop i think a pack of 10 and they were rubbish, any tightness in the screw and they just sheared the teeth. Worse than torx bits is the tamper proof torx heads.
About the hyundai, what sort of engine has it got, is the warranty still valid?

The Hyundai has a 1.1 litre engine. Should be easy on fuel, and cheap to insure.
Seems fairly basic so should be straightforward.
Nippy enough about town.
Think the warranty was out a year (they have 5 year warranties I think?)

Re: New addition to the household
i actually like saltmarines, not really the cars, but where its at, and the layout of the place.
Re: New addition to the household
They are one of the most popular cars here - mainly due to the $12,990 selling price. Not a bad hack, and they have proved to be fairly reliable. I know a few people with them and they have been more than happy!
Sounded like a good find - congrats on the purchase!

The hyundai Getz are a good motor,
very reliable, but not much boot space,
a friend of mine has one, hes had it 2 years and its never missed a beat, hes had it up for sale for the past 2 month and people have sort of frowned at it, but for £1200 on a 04 plate idont think its that bad,
its gotta be better than some other small cars, eg the Daewoo matish,
ive had a few Hyundais in the past never had a problem with them ithink there a good value for there money,

Re: New addition to the household
Thanks all.
They seem to be very popular around Belfast, I've noticed a load of them since we got it.
We got it an absolute bargain, and hopefully it should prove reliable.
Engine seems very basic, in an XUD-style good way!
One of the considerations was that she doesn't drive like I do, ie. nearly horizontal
, and we found that Korean cars (this and a Kia) are just better set up for people who aren't quite 6 foot tall.
We did look at a 307 HDi as a bit of a wildcard, but as soon as we saw it it had dents and scrapes on every panel and trim! Didn't feel to have been looked after.
