Insurance costs 90 v 110

Post by gumby6371 »

Had my usual browse of 406's on autotrader last night and spotted 2 reasonable mileage HDI S's for 2 grand each. One was a 110 the other a 90, out of curiosity I compared some meerkats to see what the insurance would be and there was only £15 difference between the 2!
Now I know 110bhp isn't massive amounts but compared to the 90 it's a good jump in power for only a few quid more to insure (plus the option of a 140bhp remap). Now as tax and fuel costs are pretty much identical why would anyone buy a 90? Does the lack of DMF etc on a 90 make it a worth while buy over a similar spec/condition 110?
Hopefully I'll be seriously looking to upgrade after christmas so I'm curious what HDI owners think

Currently own a 1.6 Ford Focus. If I was to upgrade to a HDi 90 or a 1.9TD it would cost ~£70. If I wanted a 2.1TD or a HDi 110 it's £210

Lack of DMF, was supposed to have drums instead of discs at the rear (binding issue) and I was hoping that the less stressed 90 would be a bit more reliable than a 110.

Don't faff about, get a 2.2!

Well OK, maybe it's not for everyone, but they are nice.

On the 90 vs 110, I would say 110 every time. It's higher geared, more efficient, (cos it's got an intercooler) and if new enough, has lower road tax.

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

110 is less stressed. The 90 has a a crank from a 1.8TD engine (XUD7TE as in the 205/309). The 110 has the crank from the 1.9TD (XUD9TE).
110 gets better fuel economy because you don't have to drive it as hard.
DMF failure is very rare, and if it does fail you just stick a solid flywheel on it.
Both 90 and 110 have rear discs.

And the taller gearing, don't forget. You're running lower RPM at the same speed. :)

AFAIK the 90 uses the same 'box as the XUD while the 110, 136, 16v, Tubby, 2.2 and 3.0 all use a taller one(Manuals). Am I right?

Don't think so.
HDi 90 sits at 2,500rpm at 70mph.
My old Xud used to sir ~3000rpm at 70mph.
The XUD has a cable clutch, the HDi has a Hydraulic clutch.

My bad, sorry, the 90 uses the BE4R, which is common amongst the petrols - 1.8 and 2.0 I assume? The 110 and the 136 use the ML5C & T which are also used by the tubby, 2.2 and V6.

HDi 110 / 136 = 31mph/1000 ~ 2250 RPM @ 70 mph 8)

It does - my previous Xsara HDi 90 had the lower ratio & used to drone a bit at anything much over 75.

31 mph/1000 feels too low on mine - I keep trying to change up when I'm not concentrating properly.

So far, no one's dumped an unwanted ML6 in my garden.
