Laptop for PP2000
Is there minimum specifications for PP2000, i dont really want to use my macbook for doing PP2000 incase it falls or gets damaged so i was looking for a cheap laptop off ebay, but what does it need apart from a CD drive and USB plug?

Re: Laptop for PP2000
Difficult to find a laptop with a serial port these days.
And if it uses a DOS program, you would need an old 486, Pentium 1-2 spec machine.

I use an ancient Dell Inspiron 1000 from about 2006, running XP home.
You don't need a serial port, just one USB

Should be grand. I recently sold a Toshiba laptop running XP for £80 that would've suited your needs

Re: Laptop for PP2000
my old dell inspiron 6400 would do very well but my granny is learning the computer on it (last time it was used was january), but it didnt hold any charge.
£80 sounds like a good price for a laptop.

I have an Asus EEE pc netbook (windows XP) I used it to flash the ECU on my 406. It comes with box, original charger, battery etc. Quite good condition, has had hardly any use.
I will let it go for £30+postage

Or, as gumtree would put it, a tar pc?FarmerPug wrote:thanks for the offer, but i ordered a new battery for the old dell, my granny is getting a tower pc because the laptops a bit too small.
Dells are like the Ford/Vauxhall of the computer world. OK for corporate customers, and as long as you can get replacement parts they'll do the job.

Re: Laptop for PP2000
What sort of Hard Drive does it have? A netbook is the one without a cd drive isn't it? Depending on Hard Drive size I may go for that, but need to find out how much space would be required for PP2000 to go on there. Could fairly easily get it on without the cd drive using my external hard drive, but if it isn't big enough to hold the PP2000 it'd be a bit of a wast as I'm not quite brave enough to do a DIY remap on my car just yet.406loon wrote:I have an Asus EEE pc netbook (windows XP) I used it to flash the ECU on my 406. They don't have a CD drive built in, as there is no space. You can use a USB pen drive / external hard drive or DVD drive. I've installed operating systems using these methods.
If it is flash based, the hard drive space isn't huge, but you can use SD cards or pen drives on the Acer.

Re: Laptop for PP2000
if the memory is flash then it should be more reliable than a hard drive with them being succeptable to knocks.
my dell is about 5 years old now i looked after it really well and it never gave a lot of trouble (except when i think about it) the screen burnt out but was fixed under warranty and the battery is now knackered and the space bar fell off so it got a new keyboard and the paint wore away where your wrist sits and after upgrading the ram to 4gb it made no difference at all. but it did the job eventually i used it instead of the computers in school because they had a habbit of deleting important coursework.
