I had to Google it to find out what it was.

Found this :

The threat of violence has only encouraged the protesters, some of them only teenagers, with one 18-year-old currently risking her life by locking herself by the neck to the gate of the farm.
Outside the compound there is a sign warning that the protester, known only as Emma, stating: 'Danger of death. Behind this gate a woman is attached by her neck. If you attempt to open this gate you will kill her.'

At the risk of sounding a bit controversial, can't somebody just remove the sign?

I dunno, probably best knowing where they all live rather than 'shooing' them all off to some other county without the facilities.

Moving the problem rather than dealing with it.......Policing the UK way

It's like when the Police claim to have 'gotten on top of' Drug Crime in your area, well they may have a shiny new statistic to report but what about your neighbouring town?

I'm not actually sure on my overall opinion on the situation, however what does annoy me is everyone else sticking their oars in, what concern of some random uni student is it? This is how the riots got started... :?

Recap, for those not following the news - the argument goes like this:

The Travellers legitimately own the land, and have legitimately built buildings and caravan plots over part of the land. There's no problem with that. However, they then built more buildings and caravan plots over an adjacent piece of land (again, which they legally and legitimately own), but did not get planning permission before construction began.

The Council say they want to evict people and tear down the illegitimately-placed buildings and caravan plots, because the Travellers failed to comply with planning law. If the Travellers had followed the rules on planning legislation before construction began, it would have been OK.

However, Dale Farm is located in Green Belt land, so obtaining planning permission for anything other than farming or forestry work is apparently very difficult.

</recap>

Personally, I sympathize with their neighbours, who have complained constantly about unlawful and anti-social behaviour on the part of the Travellers. These Travellers really aren't helping their case by pissing off the neighbours.

Where eviction sounds harsh, these people need to know what they are and are not allowed to do under the laws governing the people of the United Kingdom - the same laws that govern you, me, and even the government and the police. If the Travellers are not prepared to obey these laws, then they need to expect punishment.

For a civil offence like "building without obtaining planning permission" the punishment probably should be - arrest them and take them to a holding cell (in order to protect both them and the bailiffs), while the bailiffs come in and demolish the unlawful buildings only. A fine may also be imposed to cover the cost of the demolition work.

I would expect no less of a punishment for myself if I built a building without first obtaining planning permission.

There is a bigger picture, but the bottom line for me, is these people live outside of society, don't want to integrate and openly discourage it, and want to live by their own rules when it suits them, but are also expecting to be treated within our rules when it suits them.

It's like people who blatently ignore other peoples human rights, ie rapists, burglars etc, but fully expect to be treated in a manner befitting normal human rights
oh you can't do such and such to billy the rapist because it's against his human rights - WTF! Funny you didn't think about that sooner

Mini rant over, back to the bigger picture

I heard when the encampment was the normal size, the occupants were nice as pie, and caused no problems within the community
They abided by the rules, and fair play to them - I've seen travellers in our area who have been quite pleasent and caused no trouble at all

Then a load of other travellers moved in they bought the scrapyard and cleared it for housing, but didn't apply for planning permission
If you or me did anything without planning permission it would soon be torn down

I believe the Media is clouding the subject, as there is space for a number of pitches which is legal, and I don't think the local council wants to clear that, but the media is making out they do and they want them all out

I ain't got a problem with people playing by the rules ( relatively - we all bend them a little ) but these people go out of their way to not play by the rules
I don't know this, it's purely guessing, but I wouldn't be surprised if any of them are paying tax of any sort, so contributing nothing but expecting it all back

I appreciate there is an obligation to house these people, but from what Information I can gleem, there are sites available, but the travellers decided they wanted this site to be bigger than the council allocated for the site and they were single minded in this goal
I believe also from information gleemed the council has spent 10 years actively trying to resolve this in a legal matter

I'm not anti traveller, but i've seen it where they've broken gates down to pitch where they wanted, they've deficated in the street without any qualms, and in our town, destroyed' the fair site, numerous football pitches and a wildlife sanctuary built by local school children with damage in the region of £50k for two weeks of encampment.

With a lot in our society at the moment, if you can't live respectfully, don't expect to be dealt with respectfully

Er, have I gone on long enough now?
Came home to go to sleep, after being up since 1230, and here I am giving it the what for about this

Why are they being called travellers then? why don't they "travel" somewhere else?

Think of it more as a caravan site for travellers to come to - it's not the same travellers that have been there all that time, they come and go. I know that some of them have been there all the way through the legal proceedings as a way of supporting the Traveller movement in general.

The BBC article is pretty good, even including this image showing the lawful/unlawful sections of the site:

perhaps the council could take this plot off them, but provide them a new place that wouldnt be in an area likely to annoy the people living nearby.

Problem with the traveller commuinity is as people have said some are nice and pie yet others cause nothing but misery.

Now added to the fact that programmes like my big fat gypsy wedding etc, it paints a pretty poor impression of what they are like.

So the NIMBY's (Not In My Back Yard) see this and instantly do not want them into their commuinity.

My gripe is with travellers is the general attidude and the way that they tend to have little respect. With my line of work they come in regularly - wanna resurface your drive guv, want paint, floor tiles. We are a business that does nearly everything our selves.. its cheaper and easier. Added to the fact that when they come in you can see their eyes dancing like a kid in a candy shop with the toys that are for sale in my place and the equipment laying around! The other gripe is when they come into my work always tell when they do - shiney new van, drive in fast to the car park then park poorly and the first thing that they ask - always the same question - how much for that - pointing at a demo bike suitable for kids.

Be polite and respectful and people will allow you to intergrate into the commuinity! Dont try and bend people into your way of life!!
