Cars you never see anymore
Cars you never see anymore
Citroen AXs - Used to be popular, nearly bought one once
Citroen ZXs - Cracker underrated car, XUD diesels, owned 2 of these
Citroen Xantias - The attrition rate for Xantias is at the point where repairs are costing more than the car.
Ford Mondeo mk1/2 - The bumpers from these seem to be kept together with gaffer tape, and the rust proofing hasn't improved since my old Orion.
Rover 200s (pre-bubble) - These used to be popular, probably head gaskets got the K serieses, and rust the rest.
Ford Escort mk 5/6 - Pre-focus, now gone.

Lada Riva - used to be loads of the little buggers around, but I can't honestly remember having seen one for a very long time
Vauxhall Nova - the ultimate chav-wagon, Barry's pet project tart-up. Where the hell are they all now? Or are they simply unrecognisable following 20 years of tinkering?
Fiat Cinquecento - there were loads of these things around once but again, no sign of them any more; I haven't seen one for years. Not talking about the Fiat 500, but about this thing:

There are a lot fewer Mk.1 Clios around as well, but not rare enough to be considered endangered yet.

Re: Cars you never see anymore
When I saw the title the 1st ones that popped into my head were the Renault 20s & Vauxhall Victors & Vivas. These were the sort of cars my parents had when I was growing up & you just don't see them anymore.
I've had E28 BMW 5 Series, E21 3 Series, Mk2 Granadas & Mk2 Cavalier SRis - can't remember the last time I saw any of those on the roads now.

They've all gone South.....
(while I was on holiday in Dorset recently, I saw an original looking A40, a mildly tatty 'J' reg. Morris Oxford and a shiny FB Victor, all in the space of 2 days)

Re: Cars you never see anymore
Thank God for that. I felt old mentioning old Beemers & Vauxhall Victors until Doggy threw the A40 & Morris Minor into the mix!
Anybody got any ideas on what we'd be talking about 10 years from now as potential classic everyday cars? Back when I bought my Mk2 Granadas & Cavaliers there were loads of them, but a decent Mk2 Ghia X Injection or Cavalier SRi130 is worth a packet now & at the time you'd never have called them classics. I'm not thinking of things like Corrado VR6s or BMW M3, just the everyday cars like we can pick up for £1-2000 now. I reckon a decent 406 HDi in 10years time would probably fetch a large following & healthy price on Ebay, as would my C5 if I get one (as the guy with the 2.2 406 seemed to be messing me about a bit). Going by that logic, I think anything which is widely regarded as problematic when they hit the £1-2000 level is a potential classic.

Re: Cars you never see anymore
It seems impossible to tell what will be seen as desireable a decade or two on. In the early 1980's I was convinced BMW 6-series coupes would be irresistable. They don't look all that appealing now.

I thought it was made a legal requirement to append gaffer-tape to Mk 2 Mondeos' bumpers, there's a few like that round heresirwiggum wrote:Ford Mondeo mk1/2 - The bumpers from these seem to be kept together with gaffer tape, and the rust proofing hasn't improved since my old Orion.

Peugeot 309's (probably blew away in the recent gales)
The 'original' Nissan Micra
The Nissan Bluebird! what a masterpiece that was

Vauxhall Chavaliers - the 'repmobile' ones..
Calibra's - just a few hanging in there, more's the pity.
Fiesta's of more than 10 years old are very rare.
waue - I had a 1983 Cav SRi back in 1992 with a full Janspeed manifold + system, K&N filter, lowered sussy (rare back then) and MIM multi-spoke alloys (15/16"?? can't remember) it looked good tbh and it 'rolling roaded' a healthy 130bhp.
Carry on......

There won't be any desireable (desirable?) classics in the future as they'll all be suffering with CAN BUS INTERFACE errorsdogslife wrote:It seems impossible to tell what will be seen as desireable a decade or two on. You may not find them all that appealing, but having seen what they now sell for (with high miles & rusty front wings) I'd say they're a definite classic.dogslife wrote:It seems impossible to tell what will be seen as desireable a decade or two on. My SRi130 hit 144bhp with nothing but a couple of extra holes drilled in the airbox (previous owner) & we later found that by swapping the octane plugs with the ones found on other models we could get it up to 149bhp. Cheapest (if not the most effective) remap I ever found...Welly wrote:waue - I had a 1983 Cav SRi back in 1992 with a full Janspeed manifold + system, K&N filter, lowered sussy (rare back then) and MIM multi-spoke alloys (15/16"?? can't remember) it looked good tbh and it 'rolling roaded' a healthy 130bhp.

Loads of these cars where I live

One of those Fiat wotsits in the next street, 2 Mondeos.
I have a customer with a ZX and know several people with Xantias.
Saw a H reg Micra on the motorway this morning and there are 2 bluebirds near me, one is an estate....very good car the Bluebird, I had 2 of those.

Re: Cars you never see anymore
Mk2 Granadas, Cortinas, Sierras are all long gone.
My dad had a 1985 2.8i Ghia X manual in 1995. Had the front and rear spoilers, spotlights and foglights, really looked the business.
In 10 years time we'll be lamenting the decline of the 406 like the 405 now. Certainly 405 Mi16s are collectors items, humble diesels are well worth storing for the next few years.
The 406 coupe especially will be a future classic.
The Rover 75 I reckon will be a future classic, the last hurrah from the UK car production before BMW screwed them over.
Cars tend towards a banger valley effect.
New - worth new price
- Used - worth a bit off new price
-- Few years old - worth about half new price
--- 4/5/6 years old - still worth a few bob
---- 6/7/8 years old - worth a couple grand
----- Up to about 10 years old - cheap runabout
------ Banger valley - car worth it's least, seen as disposable, high attrition rate when routine servicing costs are higher than purchase costs
----- Haven't seen one of them in ages
---- Quite rare
--- Rare
-- Classic
- Collectable

Re: Cars you never see anymore
Probably happens I live in an estate full of sheeple who listen to too much Auto BavarianExpress, Top German and Funf Gear, who pull the middle clean out over base model Golf 1.4s and 316is. The ill-thought-out scrappage scheme got rid of a load of older cars too.jasper5 wrote:

Mate of mine had a Cinquecento, great fun wee car, had to rake it to make progress, go kart handling.

I've had two of them, one of which was a camper van:Welly wrote:The 'original' Nissan Micra

I had a D-reg ZX Turbo in 2009, I loved that car! Proper retro and had loads of toys for a 1986 car: power steering, fully electric windows and sunroof, electronically adjustable suspension firmness (soft, medium and hard) plus more I can't remember - http://www.flickr.com/photos/james-msc/ ... 743436726/Welly wrote:The Nissan Bluebird! what a masterpiece that was![]()

Re: Cars you never see anymore
Bluebirds, they were a great old wagon none about now at all, what size of diesel were they i remember my grampas one it had a slow lazy engine, didnt do great mpgs or make the car go fast.
Peugeot 305, once most farmers round here drove a 305 van, now its a treat to see a 305. The 309 even the 405. As for the 605 did peugeot actually make them?
Rover metro, the rover 800 which i liked, and the wedge rover 216 with the honda engine which was the one to go for and the rover 220 coupe, even the 75 is getting a bit rare. Im not sad to see the 25, 45 and cityrover numbers drop they were crap.
Range rover classic, and P38
Vw golf mk3, the 306 seems to have outlived it.
Renault 19 and 21
Audi 80, my dad had one, my grampa had one great tank of a car, havent seen one in a few years

That wee Micra camper is an extremely cool wee car.
Did it have a wee cooker in?
Bluebirds were bulletproof. Used to be said the only things to survive WW3 would be cockroaches driving Nissan Bluebirds.
