The keyboards I've had to bits have been a criss-cross network of rails, pressing a key connects the rails where they cross but no two keys connect the same two rails. So I'd think if there was a problem with a lot of keys then maybe a rail is disconnected - you could try unplugging the keyboard & plugging it in again and if that fails you're not going to make it any worse by taking it to bits have a squint

They generally don't like having drinks poured through them...

YOu seem to be missing G, H & N - all close together on the keyboard...

I can't work out what "carer" is so I don't know if it's important.

I can't imagine you getting much of a laptop for 50 squids.

You can get some small USB keyboards these days.

What are the specs on it? I doubt if it's the potos (unless the HDD is almost full, even then there are a few ways to find some space) - I keep finding loads of junk still floating about in the background on all the machines I've been looking at: things they don't use, things they don't need and things that aren't even meant to be there. The usual "cure" is to format & reinstall, it's probably easiest but it's not really necessary.

Gah! It's obvious now I know  You can buy those too, but it's up to you, if you fancy something better and have the cash floating about then go for it.

I still have a Toshiba Satellite (2450-101, p4 2.66) I bought in 2004, it was second hand but factory reconditioned, I got it from some place on the 'net with a really dodgy-sounding name (something like cheaplaptops.com) for about half the price of a new one. Apart from the battery only lasting about 20 minutes now it's still going strong and I wouldn't bother replacing it (even if I could afford to). I had to replace the HDD (the original was tiny anyway) and I've put as much memory in as I could (was 512MB, now 2Gig) - which is something I'd suggest you consider because that Dell I was playing with had the memory way deep inside so you couldn't get to it & the motherboard wouldn't have seen much more anyway. Changing it was a piece of cake on the Tosh. The only problem I have with it is I can't get to much in the BIOS so can't upgrade the processor.

have you tried popping the offending keys off and looking underneath, They should click on and off with very little pressure. With them being close together there may be something stuck underneath, worth a look.
