Passat 4motion TDi?

Post by Bailes1992 »

What you guys think?
1.9TD, 130bhp, extreamly reliable engine, constant four wheel drive etc.
Remaps to about 170bhp, loads of parts avalible, lots of VAG specialists etc.

Only problems I can see is they are dull and drab on the inside, even the 'Sport' models get crap spec (Climate, 4x leccy windows, cloth seats), oil is expensive and MPG is abit crap compared to a normal 1.9TD (45-50mpg on a run).

Looking on the AMD Essex website prices are fairly reasonable.
Full service (all filters, genuine long life oil) - £210
Cambelt + Waterpump - £310
Remap to 170bhp - £300

I know longlife oil has to be used or you'll nacker the cam up which is expensive but generally prices seem to be ok? Not cheap but not as bad as I thought?

You can pick up an 70-100k model for about £4,500 on an 03 plate with full service history.

Not sure why but kinda warming to them?

Only a personal view, but to me they have all the charisma, dynamism & agility of a blancmange....

I'd much rather have a 406

Why put the engine infornt of the front axle FFS?

Sound like tractors, too

+ a few more:

It's dreary.
It's bad to drive.
It's what they want you to have.

I thought they only really started sounding like tractors when the pumpe douchebag cams start wearing out :?

What does Honest (we hate Pugs) John say?

Holy crap Batman  They usually love all things VAdGe. Oh, and yes, the tdi 4x4 is rare. So finding bits for them in the breaker's isn't going to be easy - a small transmission fault is likely to be terminal.

Btw my mate has the contract for maintaining the ambulances for the local health centre, one of them is 4-motion and I know it's not the same thing but it's always needing expensive transmission repairs. I do remember them saying it needs special tools to do anything to the transmission too - worth checking?

Passats are a bit of a clitoris but I'm sure you'd get used to one. A 4-motion diesel was one of the cars I was looking at when I got my D9, they're a bit more common here but they all were extremely overpriced compared to the 406s, and generally in far worse condition.

I know a guy with a 54 plate one, just had to have his gearbox rebuilt at a stupendous cost. From what I hear, the PD engine suffers from failing injectors. The guy accross the road from me has had 2 replaced so far, at a cost of £500 a time. It seems they are mightly complicated beasts, and when they break it's serious money.

I think it's cos they're direct injection, but not common rail, therefore only one injection per cylcle a la Perkins / Gardner etc. of old.

my dads old car was a passat highline sport (although it was fwd) a nice car but it had problems the instrument cluster mfd needed replaced the boot opener solenoid broke twice the rear ashtray spat out cogs and springs and there was always annoying but hard to point out rattles in the dash.
and vw tdi engines they really sound unpleasent.

if you still want one but with better spec and cheaper what about an octavia scout

1.9TD injectors aren't an issue, it's the 2.0TDi injectors that have problems
But I'l take your advice and stick with wanting a 406

 Nah, every cnut's got one.

I hear it's the PD ones that give problems because they're a high-pressure cam-driven system (it's probably on Wiki but I'm not that interested) - lots of things under extreme pressure. I believe using the right oil ($$$$) stops them wearing out so quick.
