VW Golf Airbag Light Stuck On

Post by Gary406 »

i know im not on here much these days but hopefully some1 can shed some light on my problem.

ive just bought a 2002 VW golf gt tdi in black with the intention of re-selling it. (really contemplating on keeping this but the profit margine on the resale is gonna be quite a good one)

anyway the car has 166k on the clock and is the 1.9 tdi engine with 130bhp.

the only fault i car is the airbag light is stuck on... how do i get it off ?

heres a pic before ive done anything to the car. i only paid £1200 for it and plan to resell it for about £2600 once ive tarted it up...
its a very nice car drives brilliant ..excellent condition 6 speed box. cruise its got the lot

hi gary.
sorry im not of much help here,
you will need someone with Vag-com software and a lead to erase the fault code and re-set it,

you can buy the leads off ebay cheap-ish and download vag-com free trial version,

other than that, How are you mate ?

yup there is a trial version but i forgot where igot it from,
iwill have a nosey and see if ican find it,

edit,

you can legaly download it off Ross-tech, you best off downloading the VCDS-Lite
ithink the full version is about £150

old laptops running Dos, windows 95 -98 are handy for running vcds less hastle with them than configuring a uptodate os to run this software,

If you know anyone with a Launch diagnostic system they will be able to read the codes.....my mate did a VW Transporter with an ABS fault yesterday for me, diagnosed n/s rear ABS sensor fault.

A common fault where air bag lights are concerned is the connectors under the front seats get stretched/dirty. Try giving them a good clean or maybe crimp some new connectors on, probably best not to do it with the battery connected tho.

well i went with your option lozz and decided i want to know what this fault is...

anyway donwloaded vagcomm lite from ross tech and borrowed my mates usb lead and plugged it into car with laptop...

anyway narrowed it down to passangers side airbag in dash board.. searching google now and it seems to be a common problem with connectors corroding.

gonna try unplugging it and re-plugging it in 30 times (according to one guy on there it clears it everytime. lets hope thats the case.

i tried to clear the code with the vagcom software. it worked but instantly beeped and alerted the airbag fault again.

Did vagcom alow you to look at the Airbag codes,

if it Reads 0000 its disabled,
you need to Reset it to factory code, eg 1234 wouid work,
icarnt rember how to get into it by vag-com, its been years since iused it,

and that was on a ford galaxy which was Vag-based.

have a nosey on some vw forums, there might be some guides on one of them,

if its the passenger-side air bag, it may of been disabled on purpose, my sister had hers disabled as she wanted to put ababy seat in the front,

ye got a code from VCDS lite software...cleared the code but it just beeped and came back straight away..
worse case senario is a new passangers side airbag in the dashboard.
gonna remove the glovebox 2moro and unplug the airbag and check connectors on the plug.
they say the ignitor has a very long life span and its usually the connectors that corrode that cause the light to come on.

i will try clear the code again 2moro after ive cleaned up the connector plug

can i work on airbags straight after disconnectin battery or do you have to wait a period of time 1st ?

iirc, the airbags and the modules are vin coded.
you have to pair them back up if you replace them,

your best option is joining a vag forum, they will guide you through it,
