its a good test of build quality, try this on something slightly flimsy like a BX or 309, and compare it with an old merc or saab.

SO this car is supposed to go to over 160db, yet I'm led to believe levels over 130db can induce pain, hence my suspicion

This table is good:

But it doesn't mention the distance between the sound source and the listener, which is all-important - the decibel is a level of sound pressure, which falls away over distance. Also, to differentiate between other measurements recorded in decibels, you are meant to use the unit "dB(SPL)" which means "Sound Pressure Level".

There is a Wikipedia article (here) which does give a bit of distance-related information.

Also remember that decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale, so something that is 100 dB(SPL) is not twice as loud as something that is 50 dB(SPL).

More on Sound Pressure Levels can be found here:

Very true. In fact + (or -) 3dB is twice (or half) as loud.

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
