BMW Prices WTF!!!!

Post by gumby6371 »

When I was much younger my dad had a 735i and at the tender age of 15 I thought to myself I want a car like this when I'm all growed up!!!
Anyway fuel, tax and insurance have extinguished all thoughts of a 3.5 litre petrol engine sitting on my drive, however another factor is the ridiculous money a little round badge costs!!!
Are BMW's good cars - as a rule yes, are thay worth the stupid money - f*ck no!!!
A woman at work just sold a 3 year old 1 series diesel coupe for £18,000!!!, not sure what spec but it was full leather etc, but even so £18,000 for a 3 year old noddy car.
Add to that the ridiculous servicing costs and it begs the question, other than the 'I drive a BMW' what other reason is there to bleed money on a car unless you're absolutely minted?
Don't get me wrong if I got all the numbers on the lottery I'd go mad on a nice car or several but when you see so many BMW's on the road nowadays how can you justify the prices when we're all supposed to be tightening our belts!!!

If you want a laugh log onto autotrader, search for BMW 1 series, sort by highest price then piss your pants at the price of a top spec model. I bought a house for less!!!!

the prices were always quite high its a "prestige marque" but i think the prestige left bmw a few years back.
on paper their diesels are supposed to be very efficent so people might think lower running costs offset the high purchase cost.
the current c class seems a nicer car than the current 3 series

The 1-series is a fool's car, just like the A/B-class Mercs. Overpriced tat for people desperate to have the badge on their keyring

3-series are at least nice cars
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I agree with Farmerpug.

Overpriced, underspecced, and less exclusive than a bloody Mondeo.

C-Classes though seem to be very rusty

My exec choice would prob be a Lexus - classy (so long as it hasn't been 'fast and furioused'), exclusive and reliable.

The 'old' 3 series around 2000 to 2004? is now cheap, too cheap, and bought by scum bags kinda aspiring to BMW ownership but failing for all the right reasons  for some reason this current collection of cars I don't think will suffer the same issue? second-hand prices seem to have an invisible shield as protection.

I don't know why but some folk just MUUUUUUSSSSSSTTTTT have a BMW, normally pretty shallow show-off'y types. I'd normally avoid buying one so as not to be branded like this but have bought two in the past (didn't really like either of them) I would buy a 535d though - the one before this latest model that seems to appear around EVERY corner

I too don't understand why we see so many new fancy motors around cos I'm personally flat broke and just about hanging on for dear life :frown:

BM's are not so much more than the rest of the herd when new, from then on the situation just deteriorates....

On paper, everything new is supposed to be much more efficient. In reality it's all bo**ocks if the brand new hire cars I had in May are anything to go by.

As far as Beemers go, I still get nostalgic everytime I see my Dad's one. Everything is so solid on it & believe it or not, fairly simple for DIY bits & bobs. Could be though that my Dad's X plate is the last of the breed as the next gen 5 Series after that is a lot more complex & not quite as well made.

I understood that there isn't really a reliable clutch available to handle the torques?

I thought about the older (like 52/03 reg) 530d but was detered by the seeming Turbo and swirl-flappage failures :| I don't know if the newer cars are all sorted now but those particular problems wiped out your fuel savings.....and then some  (most in 'the know' saying a 530 petrol was far cheaper to run in the end :o )

Don't know if they changed the design, but there is a readily available solution for the swirl flap problem with a handy How To pdf from a BMW mag online.

I thought the solution was to take the flaps out before the engine digested any, (which kinda defeats the object, to may way of thinking). Apparently the 2.0 doesn't have any swirl flaps, but has static bits that snap of the inside of the inlet manifold and similarly destroy the engine.

Now, on a DW12, the flaps are BIGGER that the ports, so even if one were to fall off, (which I've never heard of), it can't get into the cylinders, naturellement

1985 bought a 323i brand new had a plan that i would buy a good car that would last me 10 years so i could then save to buy a house, was sold on the fact that it was a drivers car.
had it for 2 years and sold it as it was so boreing!
never felt very special in it ,there where lots of them about
good points nothing went wrong.100% reliable and very stable at speed only thing i spent on it was servecing and tyres[i think drivers car ment you could slide it/drift it under control proplem was it would slide/drift when you didnt expect it]
when i sold it didnt miss it one bit.
did get a big chunk of my money back and bought a new car, a new hatchback that was faster and handled better and was half the cost and nearly half the cc
which was a drivers real drivers car.

Bimmers are the "must have" cars here too, it's anything German but you've not "made it" until you've got a "bimvey". And then they find out the cost of spare parts (did I say my mates run a car spares shop & garage yet today?). I hang about in the shop sometimes and a look of shock is the same in any language
