Failed the MOT

Post by FarmerPug »

Went to the mot test place today, car ready and it failed, because of the handbrake.

Ive got a set of new cables because everything else is not too old in terms of brakes, the cars booked in again on saturday.

The MOT man was probably being a big poof, let it be said that only he who apply'eth the handbrake of a 406 must have the arms of a Gorilla

It's not so bad Farmer, the 406 is pretty good come MOT time :)

It was actually a woman who did the test today, and a very good looking woman she was, but she could have pulled the handbrake a bit more.

Everything else went ok at the test, they didn't do an emissions test, or check the wiper washers and i remember that getting checked last year.

Theres a new set of handbrake cables in now, took it to the mechanic and he let me help so we got all fixed there, there seems to be a more progressive action to the handbrake as opposed to nothing, nothing, nothing, a wee bit of braking. And he said he will check it before it goes for the test again which is good.

thats a pity you didn't like it, an mot station wouldn't be the worst place to work, at least the ones here seem to be very good.
are they all government run in england or part of a mechanics garage?

Hasn't the effeciency required for handbrake compliancy been increased, which given the notoriety of the 406 handbrake, makes it more likely our cars will fail on this point

efficiency required is 16% i got 15% .

Is a drum conversion from a d8 a possibility?

Well, maybe not the shoes, but the inside of the hub

I know it's maybe not the best analogy, but when I raced RC cars at national level, to improve the efficiency of the brakes, i'd get my Dremel, and score the surface of the pads and discs, and it made a dramatic improvement

It's not going to be a permanent solution, but if you scored the inside of the hub where the pads would work against the hub, it "should" improve the efficiency enough to get you through the test

I usually rough up the inside of the disk/drum before the mot anyway.

Or one from a D9 even. I can't see why not, I reckon the reason my back disks corrode is they're too powerful anyway.

Looks like the hub carriers are the same but you'll have to change the back plates - with the risk of damaging the bearings. Hydraulic lines, handbrake cables, looks like there's no difference in master cylinder though.

You're confusing films with reality again :P I've got that somewhere to make a animated gif but there's too much moving about & I couldn't be asked.

to be honest the handbrake now is actually very good, not as good as my mums clios handbrake but enough to take the strain off the clutch on a hill. But would it be a wire brush attachment that should score the inside of the disk assembly.
Is that the problem with the handbrake it can't get enough pressure on the drum?
