Taxation Of Diesel

Post by gumby6371 »

Apart from the fact it makes a lot of money for the government can anyone explain why Diesel is taxed more heavily than petrol?
Historically Diesel was a 'dirty' fuel and the additional taxation could be justified but surely now it's become in most cases cleaner than it's petrol equivalent.
Diesel fuelled cars will soon (if not already) outnumber petrols on our roads giving higher MPG's and lower emissions.

Currently a fuel that is less enviromentally damaging, cheaper to produce and more efficient for the user cost the consumer more money!!!

Diesel cars do more mpg than a petrol = government gets less tax per mile. So they tax the diesel higher than the petrol to balance it out.

At least, that's probably how they'd try to justify it...

Why would the government make it less profitable for itself?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

If someone could make a car run on water they'd heap the tax on that instead

And just think - now fuel is getting ridiculously expensive and people are driving much less in more economical cars, the government will suddenly realise they're not raking enough in from it & will need to increase tax.

no choice as it was already here when we moved in,

never had a water bill this big its a joke,
considering we recycle all the rain water etc, from the gutters for cleaning the cars with etc,
makes me wonder, if someones running a pipe off our supply, :?

Oops - ours isn't as cheap as I thought. It was instalments of £450 - total price was just over £1000.

Still, know what to look forward to when we get meters fitted in the next couple of years. Shared baths & turds left sitting in the bog for 6 hours at a time.

Everyone's on water meters here, I think we pay about 20 quid a month on this place (less on mine of course...) but there's only the two of us, I use rain water too and anyway the water comes out of a hole in the ground further up the mountain 8)

I don't remember the water being anything like as expensive when I lived in blighty - Lozz mate, perhaps there's a leak, try turning everything off and watching the meter...

1,600 quid a year is not "petty"!!
