Exhaust/cat/dpf theft.

Post by jasper5 »

My sister had the exhaust/cat/dpf unit stolen from her Iveco van over the weekend, cost £1,260 to replace

Thieving ratbags

It was either taken for scrap (there have been a lot of metal thefts in my area lately) or someone needed an exhaust unit urgently....seems odd as it's a 2008 van.

They probably thought it was a CAT. Simply get it removed from the ECU, replace it with a straight bit of pipe and enjoy the extra fuel economy!

Is that covered in the insurance?
I suppose taking an exhaust off is easier on a big van with all the ground clearance, next thing 4x4 owners will jump in to discover the transfer box is missing.

I remember hearing when I first worked for BT that over a weekend some scumbags managed to remove the engine & gearbox from one of the trucks, getting to it under a chain link fence.

Hope the insurance covers it Jasper. I'm not sure how you could stop it happening again because even security bolts won't stand up to a battery powered angle grinder  Perhaps welding it in place might run the batteries out before it was off...

Not heard of it happening to vans, but our building contractor had the one on his Mitsubishi L200 Pikeymobile nicked on is driveway at home. Cost him about £800, but it was the 3 months wait for the replacement that really pissed him off.

I was at my mot garage last week, whilst I was there some of our friends in white pickups with scrap in the back paid £60 each for their scrap cats, also a quid each for brake discs

Apparently the CAT's get sent to China or somewhere for the precious metals to be recovered but at the same time I think there's a Health risk issue to those handling the different elements (Platinum?).....I don't suppose they're bothered though if it puts food on the table :|

The sad thing is they probably leave the factory every day with precious metals in their lungs worth more than their wages.

It's platinum, not plutonium.

When I knocked out the cat element from mine, (which was unusually easy to examine as it separates at a flanged joint between the cat & FAP elements), all it had was a ceramic filter assembly with a fine mesh screen on the outlet end - about 120 mm dia. x about 0.5 mm mesh. Fairly sure it was plated steel mesh, so the amount of coating must have been truly miniscule.

Perhaps petrols have more precious metals, I can't imagine there being any significant value in my one.

Some CAT's contain Palladium which invades your body through your eyes and turns your thought-process and speech into a babbling series of pointless expressions. Some victims can be found repeating negative situations over and over in an effort to confuse and wind-up the listener whilst others can be found 'picking fault' with every day situations for no valid reason and with no positive outcome.......

.....sadly most victims are Female.

Just a bit of light satire regarding the poor wages in 3rd world countries and the lack of any form of H&S but hey, sorry if my finger isn't on the pulse of the current value of precious metals :P

There must be something in them if the dids are coughing up 60 quid a pop.

I remember hen they first started talking about fitting catalytic converters to cars and what they actually contain and I thought "they'll be disappearing left, right and centre." It's taken a while...

Remember that too, we were to expect streets strewn with overturned cars, wot ad ad their cats nicked.....

That one seemed, (at least initially), to go the same way as the millenium bug.
