2.1 is a more mechanical engine, less to go wrong in my opinion.
2.0 HDi is probably more refined, but has the same power output.

If I was you I would keep your 1.9TD and get a stage one tune done on it. Should be about 120-130bhp with 22psi, will have more gunt throughout the revs and will be better on fuel in my experience.

As long as its been looked after it should be fine. Just make sure it sounds sweet, aux belt tensioners go so if its got a noisy belt it'll need doing. At that mileage most major headaches should have been seen to if its been cared for. Good engines IMO. Just make sure its sounds right and performs right.

I tweeked my 405 to 18psi, the maximum most people seem to say is ok for a top mount intercooler. I presume with the front mount on the 406 it can be pushed a little further. I planned to give it a try but was put off by the pump armour. How did you find removing this?

The HDi will be somewhat more economical. The Lucas pumps on the 2.1 don't have a good reputation, even on pump diesel. I would be wary of running one on all but the best of quality BD. Is this a replacement for the 1.9? If so, I would be tempted just to keep that, it's a tough old nail and easy to work on.

Depending on how you drive it - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15963&start=75#p160267
The Lucas pumps on the 2.1 don't have a good reputation
Reputation being the operative word, I didn't have any problems and I haven't heard much from anyone else that has. Pug were very quick to tell me that my pump was bust but it turned out to be one of the injectors. I think the chief problem people have with them is they won't run on chip oil
even on pump diesel
Mine ran fine on the garbage they sell here, although it pulled better on the more expensive treacle.

I only mention as the poster has miscellaneous "bio fuel" mentioned in his signature. That and people knowledgeable on diesel injection systems (which doesn't include me incidentally!) never seem to have anything good to say about the lucas epic. However if I was running on pump diesel I really don't think that would put me off.

I suppose it really comes down to which car is the better example, I don't think a few MPG this way or that way is really the thing to worry about when buying a car at this price point.

Cheers guys for quick replies , all useful comments
I`m not using bio at the moment cos my mate had his gear stolen

was looking at the 2.1 because I believe the torque is higher on it than the 1.9 as I want to tow my camping trailer

I drilled one out, got bored.
Then found a female torx socket (45T I think it was) and smashed the socket on the sheer bolts with a hammer.

i have a 2.1, had it for about 4 years its now done 179000 with the lucus pump and i tow a car trailer with a car on it
and a caravan[not at the same time] and it tows well.
ive had no real proplems with mine just usual stuff, brakes, the odd electrical proplem ball joints etc
i would check when the cambelt/pully was done and if no proof get it done asap
mpg i get about 40-45 and i change the oil every couple of months as i get it for free
