Need new discs but pads still quite new

Post by Welly »

Just in general here, if you fit new discs can you get away with re-using the pads if they've only done about 7000 miles?

My discs were still fine at the last pad change but they seem to have gotten worse quite quickly (maybe the new pads?) and I think one or both of them have warped as there's a slight vibration under braking.

Need to fit new discs but didn't really want to throw away decent pads :|

I reckon Jasper would be the best person to answer this one

I guess the problem is transferring scores and whatever wear marks from your old disks. I suggest getting some fairly coarse wet & dry, putting it on a flat surface & using this to make sure the faces of the pads are dead flat. Of course you know not to breathe this stuff...

Mmm, I'll pass on your good advice to 'my man' who will be carrying out said fitments

(f*cked if I'm messing about with brakes on a freezing Saturday, on me drive, with completely inadequate equipment).

I'm actually keeping half-an-eye out for some Focus ST Callipers and 330mm discs as a kinda braking upgrade but they all get snapped up by the Mondeo boys and prices have risen in all the excitement i.e. £300.00 for a pair of rusty callipers/discs off a 4/5 year old car  :frown: the stupid thing is some of the 2.0D Volvo's got the 'big brakes' straight from the factory and no-one knows why (parts bin lottery?) I've got the most powerful model with shitty standard brakes

If I was asked to do this for a customer where I had to gaurantee the discs I would insist on new pads, but If this was my own car I would follow Steve's advice and use some 40 or 60 grade production paper and flat them down before fitting.

Ok thanks, I'll see how it pans out, the discs aren't really scored or anything - there's a bit of a lip now on the edge but I think they're warped and I'm a fussy git with brakes.

Iwouidnt put old pads on with new discs,

you can end up with brake judder,
for what pads cost your best off replacing them with new ones,
they might be new is but they wont be even, if your old disks where worn the pads will be uneven against new discs,

iput new discs on a ford mondeo and put the old pads back in, the brakes where Juddery,

The last set of genuine Volvo pads cost £75.00 from memory but that was front and rear, I'll have to dig out the invoice to see how much the fronts were. According to the Volvo forum then ONLY genuine pads should be used, they've all had bad results with after market stuff I don't know why.

I really want to do the big brake thing eventually but hate this slight judder I've picked up in the meantime.

I know

I could kick myself now for missing out on a set of Focus ST big-brakes (Asbo's  ) there was a guy on the Volvo forum selling a refurbed set, painted black, with a brand new set of discs for £295.00 posted  I shoulda got them and put them to one side :supafrisk:

Trouble is they fit Mondy's, Volvo's and Foci so get snapped up on the rapid :(

Did you put them on the main landing gear, or just the tail-wheel?

I meant for Welly to affix to the rear of his turnip. Why Puggy, what's with all the aeroplane stuff? Did I miss something? I mean did I miss something else? I know my brain's going soft but, erm, cheese and, erm, what was
