306/307 hdi what to look out for

Post by gumby6371 »

Running costs on the 406 are getting silly and I'm reluctantly considering a swap for a 306 or 307 HDI.

If I go for a post 2001 90 BHP model tax and insurance is a lot cheaper and fuel costs should be better as well, I've calculated a rough saving of £50 to £60 a month overall.
Is there anything to look out for with the 306/7 that doesn't also apply to the 406.
The engine is the same, I'm guessing the 90 is without DMF and has a cable clutch?
Is the bottom engine mount an issue with the smaller models?

I'm not happy about the potential down size but it is our second car and the bank balance is getting redder each month

Don't!

You don't get into a 306, you put it on - also think in terms of putting a metal bucket over your head & getting someone to throw gravel at it. The 1.9's also got no go, thanks to the hateful Lucas injection system. You'd hate it. The HDi 90 may be relatively lively, but it's still got no room.....

307's don't have a good reputation either and don't seem that economical. Also if you go newer, you'll find many have DPF's.

In my opinion you have two options:

1) Get a tidy low-mileage 1.9 TD 406 & run it on veg oil, (my bro's considering another one & we've spotted several in the 70 - 110,000 mile bracket for < £1k in the last few weeks).

2) Get a cheap post 2001 110 HDi - it will give you significantly more mpg, low road tax & a lot of car for the money.

2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Can't really argue with the above.
With the 306 bottom mounts are the same weak point as the 406, the usual electric gremlins with the door wiring a particular speciality. They are much smaller inside and as you would expect noisier.
I would go with one of the two options that's been suggested in the previous post.

The 306s are agood reliable little car,
icarnt fault them much, insurance Group is low which is good,

but u will find them uncomfatable compared to the 406,
the 306 is cramped, and not much boot space, :(
the dash is crap too ,

The Xsara phaze 2 is abetter option to the 306 ithink, more room, comfier and the insurance group is around the same,

ive been doing around 25miles aday so ican understand that mate,
its one of the reasons ipicked up a car with a small-ish engine, they save afew quid on fuel through the winter,

That most probs makes me sound like a Scrooge, but it has to be done,
all this credit crunch, and High insurance prices dosent help,

the Ford Kas are getting very popualar up here its that bad, :(

What's wrong with the 406  Get some veg in it, mine hasn't been on a forecourt since June. I don't even know how much a litre of pump diesel costs these days

the 307 isnt as bad as it seems they get any electrical issue a multiplex 406 will including com2000 failure and the 1.6 hdi enjoys new turbos. but a 2.0 hdi 110 defapped should be economical enough.
