Droplings won't come off

Post by FarmerPug »

Im trying to remove the front axle on the suzuki, these bolts that hold the steering linkages on don't turn, theres is a tab or something in the middle of them that doesn't let the socket on them:

That looks like a castellated nut with the remains of some split pin oxide fused onto it - it was once like this....

A bit of bashing at the pin to get it out then, it seems determined to stay where it is.

The brakes have failed but i can't see any leakage round the callipers, though these joints seem very damp:

if the pin wont come out,
get an old socket and smack it on and get a breaker bar on it,

are you removing the leaf springs?
if you are id be careful mate you will need to take the weight off the spring or it couid injure you,

Brutally simple, but yes tough as nails.

Its sitting on bricks right now, the bricks are on the axle, i suppose i need to lift the body up off the springs to take away the tension.

Bend up the tab (old split pin) soak it in WD40 and fit a hexagon socket on it then breaker bar.

If you are refitting the nut, after tightening it up drill a small hole for a new splitpin.

The oil is leaking from the axle through an oil seal inside the ball fitting....needs new seals.....not an easy job.

I refurbished a Nissan Patrol front axle last year, like the Land Rover they are all very similar.

You need to undo the discs, calipers, wheel bearings etc and pull out the driveshafts. You need to undo the bolts at the top and bottom of the axle casing (watch out for shims which adjust the play in the stub axle ....like ball joints on a standard axle.....the plates at the top and bottom may be rusted onto the axle casing....to remove use a very sharp chisel between the casing and the plates to seperate them.

Undo the bolts at the back of the axle balls....these hold the big oil seal in and split.

Replace the small oil seals in the inner axle tubes, this is where the main oil leak is coming from.

Clean up the balls with some heavy sand paper, they will probably be pitted, then clean them with wet and dry until they shine.....when you refit them coat them with lots of heavy grease to help them bed into the new seal and to stop leaks from the pitted balls....ideally replce the balls, but cost will be too much I would guess. The Patrol ones I did are still going strong without leaks using this method.

Be careful fitting the driveshafts back through the axle tube oil seals.

thats the oil seals  they're not cheap for all they are.

though would this be better:

to do a full rebuild of the front axle?

The full kit for sure!

You'll need to replace the taper roller bearings top and bottom of the swivels, so the kit is good value compared to the cost of just the ball seals.
