Frikin Sat-navs

Post by lozz »

What is it with sat-navs ?
people swear by them, saying there awesome, :?

Been down south today, Warwickshire
Sat-nav got me down there Fine,
stopped at destination, had Brew and set back off home,

tom tom just went into lock down mode,
this is the 3rd sat nav ive used and all have been a failiure also inoticed whilst the sat-nav was in use the Radio in the Citreon was useless all fuzzy and loosing stations (weird)

at one stage the sat nav told me iwas 13000 miles away from home,
are all tom toms temprimental or is it just my bad luck ?

When we went to england during the summer we used my dads old garmin, not a single problem, recalculated the journey even when my dad though a road looked nice and decided to drive down it instead. Although it does occasionally take the less direct route, when we got the sat nav, the first journey it did was when we bought the uncles previa in manchester, the drive back to the ferry in stranraer it was faultless most of the way, even let us know where speed cameras were, but we got to scotland because we didn't have a clue where abouts to go we followed the sat nav, although this was ignoring the fact all the lorries were going another way, we got to gretna, and ended up driving through 20 miles of nowhere, all very lovely scenery but a country drive wasn't what we were after at that time :cheesy:
It did the same when we took another uncles camper round ireland, it just went mad in fact, avoiding all the proper roads and sending us up through the most inappropriate roads possible, and i hear my cousin say the same things happens in his lorry the sat nav sends him up roads that a 40ft just can't go near.

i downloaded the tomtom app on my iphone and put it in a holder its a lot cheaper than getting a seperate device as a sat nav and does the job as good as a dedicated sat nav, the lane guidance is handy.
the only downside is it guzzles the battery away in no time.

about the sat nav these were notable times when it decided to give us a tour normally it behaves itself and has always got to the right place.

Cheers Archangel.
ithought the tom tom shouid be good, especialy the expensive ones,
those that had Recomended them to me must of had the cheapist ones,

iwill Return it and see if theyl Re fund or atleast replace it with one that works for 100% of a journey,
strangely, its done exactly the same as the other ones ive had, eg the cheapo Binatone. AA. and the Garmin,
in the same place, in The Birmingham area, Hmm iwonder if sat-navs wont work near, many Pylons :?

I & two other in the family have TomTom 1's, (mines nearly 5 years old now). All have been brilliant.

The only issue I have is the 406's athermic windscreen blocks most of the signal.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

i think its how the windscreen is made something about reflecting sunlight to keep it cool which gives it that bluey shine to it, but it can also reflect gps signals and reduce sat nav signal.

Very true mate,
its most probs the Uv film implanted in the middle of the screen,
looks like ive had no luck with sat-navs due to lack of Research,

last car ihad problems with sat-navs with was the Ford Galaxy thats on the list in the link above too,
that means ive Binned afew sat-navs and theyve not been faulty, :(

Iwonder why the sellers/Makers dont put anything on the box or instructions advising people of the problems with these Uv inpregnated screens :?

Now what do ido, Drill hole in Roof, and add another stupid looking airiel to aid a sat-nav to work or resort to going back to Atlas,

ive had alook mate,
and all ican see is the ones that fit on the outside of the glass or roof by the looks of it,
its something idont want to do, it wouid make the car look like a Ex taxi,

iwill go back to the shop igot the sh*t-nav from and see if they can supply us something that will make it work
or failing that give us a Refund or replace it with something that may not require external /internal taxi looking equiptment,

what sort of sat nav (make, model) is it i wonder could it be routed
to the back window area on a 406 thats where the sat nav antenna sits

there is also car aeriels available that have a gps antenna so the original aeriel can be swapped and it doesnt look like a taxi
