Winter tyres

Post by FarmerPug »

Is anyone thinking of getting these, do you need to get a set of 4 or can 2 winter tyres on the front wheels do just as good. I have some old steel wheels with normal tyres but i was thinking of putting winter tyres on.
Are they any good?

I got through fine last year on budgets, gone for Falken Ziex912's this year. Good mid range assymetic all weather tyre! For a cheap mid change tyre it's epic! Very quiet and very grippy. Would reccomend these to anyone!

how much do they usually cost for a pair or set of winter tyres.
The thing is my dad normally goes to the local scrap yard for tyres, and they can be quite cheap, a nearly new Michelin on the back of my car cost £15 if i could put a pair of winter tyres onto steel rims just for the snow it might be a bit grippier, although your right about the 406 it grips quite well as it is.

~£90 a tyre usually.

I pay £50 for the falkens.

I'd personally NEVER use part worns. You don't know the history of them. What if they've been in a car thats had a smash?

Part worns have to meet a certain critera before they should be sold. 90% of all part worns sold don't meet this criteria!

Theres nothing wrong with part worns, :frown:
especialy when your on a tight budget a family man will know what imean

paying daft money is ok for someone with deep pockets but for such as me iwouidnt dream of spending more than £35 -£40 per tyre,

If i go to the scrap yard, i ask for the tyre man, they send me on down the yard he has his own hut, tell him my da sent me (he went to school with my da) and then its a case of going and getting the tyres, usually the tyres are off smashed cars but they are still quite new cars with new tyres, and really cheap.

Ok so I see there's a lot of bad habits going on in UK about tyres, IMHO.
C'mon, tyres and brakes are THE most important part of your car. They are something you should never save money on.
Better to get no winter tyres than to get only 2 of them. Getting two of them will only cause huge instability when braking. The rear will not brake while the front will. You guess it: you start spinniiiiiiiiing!

I'd go for 4 good tyres, it's something I repeat to everyone. Cheap chinese ones will never be as good as a good tyre.
Remembre winter tyres aren't there for snow only. tests show that winter tyres (due to their rubber) have much better grip and braking capability under 6-8°C, so if where you live it's cold during the winter - like where I live - they are a good thing. If it snows only once in a while and it's usually above 10°C I wouldn't bother.

I personally got 4xGoodyear Ultragrip 8s. They are very good, and among the best makers they are the cheapest. Still, they got very good results in ADAC and TCS tests. We've not had snow here yet, but grip when it's cold and grip on the wet went immensely high compared to my previous Michelins.
For me, that's money well spent.

ive been using part worns for ages -never had a problem
neither have others that use the Garage iuse,

the part worns are mostly those that have come off cars that have come in and the owners said il have 4 new tyres please,
the chap at the yard checks each tyre before its re-fitted and resold,
if its not fit for purpose the person who had the tyre changed is charged £1.50 for disposal of each case,

ipay them around £15 -£20 per tyre thats balanced and thrown in water tested for leaks,
idont think thats too bad for a Michelin or pirreli tyre with plenty of meat on it ,

I don't know if what I've seen is part worn, some of the cars are less than a year old. Though they might not actually have any winter tyres sitting on crashed cars.

We're all driving on part-worn's anyway, unless you want to buy a new set of tyres every two days

I bought some about 3 years ago for her indoors car :supafrisk: they 'let me loose' in their yard and I pulled out a pair of Michelin Pilot's and gave them a mega close-up. There was no side wall damage, no signs of puncture repair and they were worn evenly with no cuts/tears. I watched them rotate evenly on the balancing machine so was happy with them.

You don't get to have such a close look when buying a used car and we're quite happy to drive that on the motorway or whatever.....

Got a set of 4x Dunlop WinterSport M3's off ebay for £75, 4-5mm. I've never used winter tyres before, I'll be interested to see how it goes. However driving technique is the most important. We had our first snow fall here last night, and about 1cm of snow this morning. I note with dismay that already many drivers are struggling, even those in 4x4's
