Re: Which 406 ?
90BHP for simplicity, you won't get an 'exec' 90 though.
The DMF fitted to the 110 isn't that much of a problem but slipping clutches are. The 110 also has other problems like eating engine mounts and tearing through exhaust flexi's etc.
I'd deffo get a 90bhp if it was me next time (and probably chip it to 120bhp

Re: Which 406 ?
The 2.2 is an awesome engine. Common problems? Well, EGR and FAP related ones can ba avoided by removing them as you know. Flywheel isn't a huge issue it seems, the pulley is a bit** like on all early HDis. You can grab a non decoupled one maybe?
Turbo and gearbox are pretty strong. The gearbox is the same as the 2.0 110 and 90 (I think), but the latter has shorter gear ratios.
The 110 is the one that offers the best economy (on par with the 90 probably, which is a little underpowered imho, and you don't want to push it too far since it doesn't have an intercooler).
The 2.2 is the quieter and most refined of the three, also the most fuel hungry. However, it's still awesome in that point, I get 50mpg on average and that's with injector problems and still EGR and FAP. I bet I could get at least 55mpg with those problems fixed. With the same driving style I'd get something like 60mpg with the 110, a little less with the 90 since the gearing is shorter and I do lots of motorway journeys.
For my usages (70% motorway) the 2.2 seemed the best choice, and I'm sure if I had gone with a 110 I'd have regretted it.
Power aside the 2.2 can go up to 180hp (and torque touches the magic 400 Nm number) easily, the 110 around 140-150hp.
Imho the 90 isn't worth it.

Re: Which 406 ?
The 'Tan' interior is super-rare I've only ever seen a handful in my time of 406'eryness.
It's not to everyone's taste I think as it is quite a strong colour, looks good in the coupe too.

Re: Which 406 ?
I spotted that one & thought it looked decent. Which model is best largely depends on what you want in terms of spec, mileage & price. I'd be very surprised if that seller is looking to let it go for less than £1500.

they are like the saloon to drive... I actually regret I didn't get an estate. Luckily the one I was after was relisted a month later with a big "turbo blown" disclaimerGary406 wrote:ye i wont bid on it just see what they go for. gonna do a few weeks without a car probably till january...

110s are the best for overall economy... both maintenance and fuel.

Being a bit biased but i think the 110 is fantastic, especially now after using the galletto.

Re: Which 406 ?
Both my hdi 110 estates have been really good. The first one is still going strong with 240k on the clock. They drive really well with the 110 lump.
I'd be more worried by how it's been looked after rather than which engine. I think that counts for a lot.

Re: Which 406 ?
One thing to think of is if you get a post March 2001 110bhp the tax is only £130 a year as opposed to a 2.2 136bhp is £190 a year i think, something to think of with the rising costs of running a car nowadays.

Re: Which 406 ?
can all hdi 90s be re-mapped ? looking at a few "S" models which all seem to have 90bhp engine ... i think i may go for 90 for simplicity like you sayWelly wrote:90BHP for simplicity, you won't get an 'exec' 90 though.

Re: Which 406 ?
I think only the early 90's with Bosch ecu's can be remapped, later ones have Siemens systems which no-one wants to touch.
The 90 has shorter gearing and no intercooler, so less efficient than the other two, (I think the 110 is actually a lower tax band than the 90, due to lower emissions)!
In my opinion, the 90 is a tad underpowered, the 110 is the sensible choice and the 2.2 is undoubtedly the most expensive, but not by enough to make it unattractive.

Keep your wits about you though as i've looked at a couple lately around that price and you'll be suprised what some people call "immaculate" and "very good condition" and they turn out to need shedloads spending on them to get them to the description of the seller
