Neither.
All you need is an MOT and insurance.
The insurance has to be valid for at least one month into the future.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Pretty sure lozz is right and you need the new keeper slip.

I've taxed cars on a day insure policy a couple of times before...

a check of my V5 says you can use the green new keeper bit (V5C/2) to tax it up to 2 months after acquiring it.

if i remeber right if it as already been used to tax a car they stamp it with the date to make sure you apply for one before the tax is due again but if it hasnt been stamped you just need the green slip

Mileage is high,
but its ex plod so no doubt its well maintained,
ive known the car for over 4 years and all ican say its done around 50miles in 4 years,
the person who originaly bought it amate of mine wouidnt drive it because of something that happend whilst he was driving it one day, nowt wrong with the car its just something what someone did that put him off driving it :(

Don't you need the car to be registered on the Motor Insurance Database?

With my motor trade policy there is a legal requirement for all vehicles in my posssession or for sale to be registered on the MID.

hi mate,
iknow a few traders and they just go in and tax any car,
the last car ibought off a trader they taxed it for me icame out with logbook as they know me,
so ipresume car dosent have to be recorded on Mid to have it taxed,

im unsure on this ,iwill find out more tomorow when ipop in post office,

just paid 2k for this policy so im hoping its worth the paper its written on
