BSI = Built-in Systems Interface (Boitier de Servitude Intelligent in French) - manages in-car features (auto lighting, cruise control, electric seat position memory, stores the mileage, manages the multifunction display)
COM2000 = computerised control system through which all auxiliary steering column inputs (i.e. auto lights, wipers, indicators, the trip computer functions, the horn, etc - but NOT the steering) are directed, interpreted, and passed to the BSI to be carried out. Only appears on fully-multiplexed cars from mid-2001 onwards.
D8 = not an acronym - just represents the internal design name for the Mk.1 406 (from 1996 through to mid 1999)
D9 = not an acronym - just represents the internal design name for the Mk.2 406 (from mid 1999 through to end of production in 2004).
DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter - an emissions control device fitted to 2.2 litre 16v HDi engined 406s from 2001 onwards
ECU = Engine Control Unit - manages fuel mixture, ignition timing, idle speed, valve control, etc.
FAP = Filtre à Particules - the original French name for the "DPF"
HDi = High-pressure Diesel Injection - PSA Group's name for their common-rail diesel engines
HPi = High-pressure Petrol Injection - a short-lived 2.0 litre direct-injection petrol engine used on the 406 range
HU = Head Unit - the stereo system fitted to the car
MFD = Multi-Function Display - the multipurpose screen that shows the date/time, CD/Radio station, sat-nav (if fitted), trip computer (if fitted), outside air temperature, and the settings screens for configuring your date/time, etc. Fitted to D9 cars; D8 cars get something a lot more basic.
MUX = multiplexed wiring - more modern approach to car wiring where signalling between various components is passed over the same set of wiring, rather than requiring completely separate wiring for each and every individual electrical item in the car. All 406s have multiplexed wiring, but cars from mid-2001 onwards are referred to as "Fully MUX" (introduced at the same time as the COM2000 unit).
PSA = Peugeot Société Anonyme - now referred to as PSA Peugeot Citroën, this is Peugeot & Citroen's parent company
VVT = Variable Valve Timing - improves the efficiency of an engine by changing the lift, duration, and timing of the intake and/or exhaust valves based on the rotational speed of the engine. Fitted to the ES9J4S V6 petrol engine and the EW12J4 2.2 litre petrol engine.
I've got some of these codes up on the Wiki on the relevant engine description pages. Not 100% sure any of it is absolutely correct so could use someone with the knowledge to go look it over and edit where necessary.Doggy wrote:anyone for a resume on the XU / XUD / DHY / DW engine codes alphabet soup?
