Another MOT passed, but changes to MOTs again

Post by DaiRees »

So my lovely Pug will be celebrating her 10th birthday on the weekend and as such has just been in for her annual medical, which she of course passed with flying colours so I now have a certificate until Jan 8th 2013 8). She's going to pass 84K miles today too

The tester was telling me that another load of new changes to the MOT came in on the 1st of Jan. Nothing too big but lots of stuff that used to be an advisory will now be a fail, such as split rubbers on ball joints, any signs of rubbing or cracking on hoses etc, also tow bar electrics will now need to be tested. This is particularly worrying for people who are running older cars or hobby vehicles (like loads of my mates with their 4X4s), I mean you see some obviously dangerous cars running around by people who clearly haven't got a clue or don't give a crap, and something needs to be done about them, but I just feel than in some cases they're going a bit far and we'll end up scrapping older cars way before their time and pricing poor motorists off the road. Discuss

That's one way of looking at it.

Another way of looking at it is that a car can pass an MOT with a couple of advisories in January, but by March, the items that were advisories could have deteriorated to a failure level. This would mean that the car would (most likely) be unroadworthy for 10 months, as it may not get fixed until it fails the next MOT.

How would you feel if somebody ran into your car because their brakes were shot, but hadn't been fixed before because they had only been "advised" that the pads were low in the MOT a few months before? Would be very easy for one of us to say that they should have got them fixed when it was an advisory, but some people just don't think about things like that.

Some of the changes seem silly, but if your car passed a UK MOT test tomorrow, it'd be interesting to see how many countries would then fail it by their own standards. Anybody remember the Top Gear with the Cossie, M3 & Merc 190E?

My 2005 Volvo is already an MOT failure on the go :frown: it needs new front wishbones and two link arms on the rear.

Nothing was mentioned in the MOT in February 2010 so it does go to prove how quickly things can fall into failure.

I knew it wasn't right so this has given me a month's notice to get the bits together rather than have it fail on the day.

I'm all for stricter MOT's but then I look after my motors so shouldn't fall foul of any nasty surprises :|

Well done anyway Dai, does this mean you'll keep the old bus for a bit more?

Don't do it Dia!

Volvo V60 estates are driven by frustrated individuals with high blood pressure.
