Possible New Car

Post by gumby6371 »

I'm off to look at a D8 1.9td LX on Saturday with a whopping 85,000 miles on the clock.

It has 6 months T&T and from what I can tell on the pics is in very good condition.
The seller has said I can have it for £650 :D
Cam belt was done at 73,000 and he tells me it's been serviced regularly (I'll see what it drives like before I believe that bit)
Knock off the cost of 6 months tax and thats a super low mileage veg burner for a touch over £500!!!
If it pulls well I'll be cheaky and see if I can knock a few quid off but if nothing obvious presents itself on the test drive I'll be having it 8)

As these things are a pretty indestrucible if it drives well and pulls there isn't much to check for but I'm starting a list anyway;

Oily coolant
Smokey exhaust
Droplinks
Engine Mounts
Oil/Diesel leaks
Starts easily
Turbo pulls from just under 2000 revs
Smooth tickover
Electrics (not many I know but remote locking would be nice)

Can't really think of much else but feel free to add

Also what can I easily transplant from my GLX that an LX doesn't have?

I'll be checking for wiring for front fogs and electric windows in the back, parcel shelf with rear sunblind should be an easy swap, any other suggestions?

it depends what year the 1.9 is. my 1999 model 1.9 has leccy windows. leccy sunroof. leccy and heated wing mirrors. (do glx d8s have leccy seats ?) well mine will have those anyway when i fit my leather

forget checkin the droplinks . cost peanuts to fix (if there knocking use it to barter on price) my new d8 i got few weeks ago sounded like back end was falling off over bumps. cost me £10 for 2 links and now its solid
also bottom engine mounts usually ok on a 1.9.
smokey exhaust ? ever diesel smokes a bit (you see brand new range rovers pumpin smoke out) dont worry about a bit. the veg oil will help clear it

also oil leaks. i think its only normal for these to leak a small amount. obviously you dont want it dripping. but do expect to see a bit at the back of the engine from the turbo. and possible from the crankshaft oil seal. again its only normal .

i would be more worried about the timing belt . proof of it cos if he doesnt have proof then take it as not done and you will need to do it with it being on 85k .(about £300 for this job)

generaly the 1.9 is a darn good engine and very rarely causes problems .

the wiring for the front fogs will be there as long as its not a 1996 model i think those didnt have the wiring . but both my 1998 and 99 models did have. a relay and stalk is all i needed to fit and they worked

chek the coolant is clean and blue. and not just water. water only will probably tell you its got a leak and its being topped up with water.

check the aux belt pulley is running nice and smooth. if its vibrating bad or making the belt shake it needs replacing. again around £100 for that job done .

you got an advert for it so i can look ? pm it to me if you dont wanna publicly post it 8)

Thanks Gary,

it is a 96 on a P plate.

The car was on ebay but didn't sell at £700 which to non 406 drivers is a lot of money for a P reg car.

I will ask for a receipt for the cam belt.

The reason he's offered it to me is because I asked about the cam belt when it was still on auction, clearly nobody else showed any interest. It's only 30 miles from me so it's got to be worth a look.

Mine is really underpowered now so it's change car or fix and I think changing car is the cheaper option.

Doing the maths even if he sticks to 650, 6 months tax is 120, I was offered 250 for mine by a garage last month, so that's 650 - 370 =£280 (assuming it's in the condition he says it is, bargain)

as long as a 1.9 has been looked after then it does not matter about the milage. these engines will do in excess of 250k. so going for an 85k miler doesnt really mean your getting a mint one.

my 1998 has 164k on now and its VERY clean. its solid . the ride is smooth no knocking at all now . it pulls really strong . there isnt a spot of rust on any arches.

ive seen cars with 50k on and cars with 300k on and the 300k ones are much cleaner than the 50k ones.

gumpy back onto your sluggish one ? have you tried blanking the EGR ?

no matter who is selling a car . if your buying and you have a slight doubt then walk away . theres plenty more fish in the sea ..

but im sure midsmikes bro's car will be a decent one . 8)

If its the one I just found (& it probably is) it looks really tidy. It's either the same red as Gary's old one or the slightly lighter shade.

If you're looking at the red one in Burslem Staffs that's it. Pics don't show the front end or passenger side bit it looks good from what you can see.

Got to be worth a ride out as it's only 25 miles from me.

On the down side I asked my insurance for a quote today and as it's over 15 years old they refused to quote!!!
Go compare came to the rescue and it's £25 less than my GLX due to having less toys to go wrong :cheesy:

An old Gumtree trick.
It will have been involved in a major collision or scraped all along a post on the nearside. Give it a good long inspection, dodgy paintwork, ripples, bumps, rust on the nearside door bottoms.

The headlights and grille likely cracked.
