Citroen Berlingo Engines

Post by FarmerPug »

My aunt is looking to replace her avensis for something easier to drive and more practical and the berlingo multispace seems good but there is a lot of engines to choose from

- 1.9 non turbo 71bhp
- 2.0 hdi 90

- 1.6 hdi non turbo 75bhp
- 1.6 hdi turbo 91bhp

what is the best engine?
are the 1.6's used here the troublesome engines?

From the little I've heard / experienced, I'd favour the 2.0 HDi 90.

I've heard of problems with 1.6's too and a friend in France wound up sending a 206 1.9D for scappage after repeated engine ecu problems.

(I recognise that's a very small sample).
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

The 1.9 xud is a bit too slow for my aunt, she would never be using veg oil so its a bit pointless, but the 2.0hdi and 1.6's seem like viable options, did they ever offer a 110bhp hdi?

1.6 is a nightmae in the 407s I've been sold from someone who runs fleets for an all-Ireland engineering company.

My choice would be the XUD, had it in the ZX and for pottering about it is adaquate. Very very reliable.

But if you need overtaking or speed onto the motorway, HDi would be the one to go for.

Are you sure the 1.9 is an XUD? - AFAIK the later 306/206's have a different engine - 1868cc or something, with a different fuel system, can't run 'em on veg either, all smacks of penny-pinching.

They are an XUD doggy, they had a plastic inlet manifold and a semi ecu controlled pump, but they were still a basic XUD block.(Trying to think what they are called  )

Also MrFarmerPug, the 1.6 just comes in two different power forms (Much like the 2.0 HDi 90 & 110) they are both turbo lumps. There is no n/a 1.6.
When you think a 1.9NAD (The XUD) was pulling 71 BHP, I doubt a 1.6NAD could pull 75bhp  A commonrail would also me totally pointless on a NAD because the fuel a small mechanical pump could supply it would be perfectley adequate.

Personally I would go for the 2.0 HDi. I was getting 50mpg out of mine which always had a full boot, it was torquey even though it didn't have much go and it was a really lazy drive. I loved it!

The HDi 90's really lively in a small car, my Xsara was really nippy, quicker than the dogmobile round town / country lanes. I drove it pretty hard and averaged 49 mpg, occasionally 52/3.

I agree the HDI 90 Bingo is nippy - I managed to get a speeding ticket in one - 89mph on the warwick bypass, and I didn't even realise i was going that quick

The 2.0 looks like the best choice then, I'm already a fan of the engine in the 406 so it should be just as good in a berlingo. Is it all the same things to watch out for i.e. crankshaft pulley, electrical issues, mounts etc? There isn't any FAP or DMF in them?

Mr Bailes1992 :cheesy: it says on what car the 75 bhp 1.6 was not turbocharged, it sounds odd I've never heard of this engine before though i wonder were they tring to make something similar to vw's SDI?
The only reason for buying a 1.6 berlingo would be that it would mean being able to buy a younger van.

They are lieing. It's a 1.6 turbo with its power dulled down.
I've driven a Volvo C30 1.6D and it had massive lag, pulled from 2000-3500rpm and that was it.

i will agree with you what cars information can be a bit rubbish, for the 406 they say brake disks can warp and replacements are expensive. Thats not particularly true disks can warp on any car and the 406s disks are no more expensive than disks for any other car.

Im going to go with her to have a drive in a few berlingo vans at a place which has a few non multispace berlingos to get a feel of what they are like, what do you think of this:
