Overspray particles found on my car

Post by Welly »

Where I park at work is residential and not exactly a prime location :supafrisk: everyone I know through working around there is friendly etc a lot of the blokes do there own repairs/welding/smashing things with hammers but some utter twat has at some point recently carried out some amateur spray paint repairs near my pristine motor and showered the thing with tiny dots of, what looks like, grey primer. It must have been windy maybe.

It came to my attention when I used the windscreen wipers the screen sounded 'rough' and sure enough the screen, side windows and front N/S quarter of bodywork are peppered with spray paint :frown:

I was thinking to clay bar the car? can I clay the glass? I really need something to lift the tiny dots away from the surface rather than trying to rub them away.

Bilt Hamber do a corse clay. Although I belive any clay can be used with water, bilt hamber is specifically designed to be used with nothing more than water.
You can clay glass too!

If you're claying then you might aswell prep the car for winter. Best option would be too clay the car to get the paint as clean as possible. Polish the car using a micrfibre applicator and some autoglym superresin polish. This contains lots Of paint cleaners, a slight cut to remove very fine scratches and swils along with fillers to try hide the rest and will prep the car ready for wax.
For an LSP you could try meguiars #16, I've personally had 6 months out of it. Or you could try one of the collonite sealents.
You could also try the carlack twins to give the glass a polish and protect it.

A good layer of protection will help you if this sort of thing happens in the future.

Cheers Bailes, I've got some Megs Clay and Quick Detailer and their 3-step cleaner, polish and canuba wax still left over so I'll give that a go.

Pissed off about it because it's going to take up my time when I'm otherwise very busy at the moment, it's freezing out there, and all because some arse got a bit careless with a rattle can :frown:

I'd be tempted to use a solvent rather than anything abrasive on the glass, (naturally taking enormous care not to get any on the paintwork).

If he can do it without getting any on the paint then pvc cleaner will do the job.

Forgot about Meffs I've got some somewhere (for the Glass).

I'll only do it if it's not raining. I've actually got a double garage but it's filled with double the amount of crap you'd see in a single garage  it used to be spotless too, I fitted it out like a Lab about 4 years ago.....

I'm one of those nutters you'd see outside at 0deg C wearing a T-Shirt, once I get busy I don't stop, I'd have that car done in a couple of hours with sweat dripping off me :o

That sounds all to familiar, the day i started my kitchen was also a Friday when we went away so i put the roof box on the car leaving a gap in the shed... i was busy the day we came back so left the box on there over night... BIG FOOKING MISTAKE the shed has filled up with all my tools that i havn't had the time to move yet... Guess where the roof box is now... Yep still on the roof since September 24th.

I need to get it off soon just in case we have snow.

Clay isn't abrasive. Far from it!

Also glass is heck of lot harder than the paint.

Are you sure it's paint? Could be industrial fallout (iron filings etc). Iron X might be worth a try?

It was everywhere, Windscreen, side windows, rear window, body panels :| the clay lifted it like a breeze, I had a little tub of hot water and rotated 3 pieces to keep them soft as it was fairly cold out there.

Followed the claying with a Meguiars 3-step paint cleaner/polish/carnauba wax using microfibre applicators and polishing towels.
