Another 406 to car heaven

Post by 406lover »

After owning my 2.1 406 estate for 9 months it has finally got the better of me and i give up.

I brought it from a close friend, that had no problems with it, and used to drive to 140 miles each day for work for 5 years. When i brought it the speedo and fuel gauge had minds of there own. (one would work and the other wouldnt) Then driving it myself one day i pulled up went in to the shop come out and there was a puddle of water under the drivers side wheel i had a look and could not see any leaks, any way on closer insepcstion she had dumped all her water from the metal water pipe that goes along the wheel arch. tjat was just the start. since i have had it ive put 7 pairs of tyres on the back due to the outside of the tread wearing away fast. tracking seems ok. but the main thing now is the timing belt has gone and done my vavles.

after getting a garage to look at it and being told it was going to cost over £800 to fix, I went for swaping the engine over. i have now spent 3 days and 2 nights doing this, with only stoping to eat xmas dinner, the new engine is finally in. but i have had to do so many swaps over and found out that things have broke.

1) left driveshaft end broke,
2) had to swap all the inlet and mainfold over
3) had to swap turbo over
4) top right engine mount broke
5) need all new cv garters
6) got to swap over oil sumps to cater for the air con pump (which is now the final straw)
7) have the bolts have been misplaced in the garage.

i really dont want to get rid of her because i know i will never find one the same, minis the faults. i just need a lil bit of incougement and maybe she will get there but the way im feeling at the moment the next person i see with a tow truck can have it

I guess it really depends on what the rest of the car is like. Sills ok? What about the rear brake back plates?
406lover wrote:1) left driveshaft end broke, All D8 driveshafts for cars with the ML5T gearbox and with 29 teeth on the ABS reluctor rings (2.1, early HDi, 2.0 turbo & V6) are the same.
2) had to swap all the inlet and mainfold over
3) had to swap turbo over Were they diffferent or just broke?
4) top right engine mount broke Bugger :( There are two sorts btw
5) need all new cv garters Easiest to change now, while they're off, than later.
6) got to swap over oil sumps to cater for the air con pump (which is now the final straw) Oh, the bracket is part of the sump.
7) have the bolts have been misplaced in the garage. Time for a tidy up!
The geometry on the back is adjustable, was just the front wheel tracking done? It needs all 4...

Speedo faults are usually the transponder (over the glovebox) Fuel gauge could be the sender or wiring I guess.

Speedo/fuel gauge issue could also be dry joints on the panel, very easy to fix :)

Sorry to hear that but if you spent so much work on it already it would be sad to give up now.
Go all the way if you can,if not,ok,you gave your best to save it.
Most of people would give up when belt snapped.

Sounds like you need a donor car with a working engine and dials that have already been re-soldered and work fine and whose MOT failure items do not correspond to your list of needs.

after sitting back and thinking long and hard and having a tear or two appear, (sad i know) i have decided to keep it and get it sorted.

when i was first offered it i said i hate pugs all together, not having driven one before. once i drove it i feel in love with the car, and we have been though a lot together, towing the other halfs horse box with 2 horses, a caravan, and then the 18 foot boat i use for work, and have never had a problem towing either. the only thing i did have a problem towing was my brothers mini track car that snaked the whole way down the road. (40 miles down the wheel past me on the motorway   :supafrisk: )

anyway as for the bolts that have gone walk abouts im going to have a chat with, local breakers and see if he will sell me the bolts i need. (worth a shot)

everything else like the sump and turbo are lil things compered to wait me and my brother have been though over xmas getting it in.

why im on the subject of turbos, i had to swap them over because the turbo that come with the new engine sat a lot higher then the one that come with the car.

apart from that im going to let this weather pass otherwise i can see me useing the boat to work on it, and im going to get the lil bits done and ready for a mot, as the sills and bodywork have not got a signel mark or rust on it.

im going to try and post some pics of my baby on here very soon

Get a new timing belt kit, put both engines on a desk. Lock up the cam, crank and fuel pump. Swap the fuel pump over, while on the desk swap the exhaust manifold, turbo, sump, A/C compressor. Fit a new timing belt kit and drop it straight in!

Good decision! Where are you based? There's an excellent scrapyard called A5 Salvage in Leighton Buzzard that specialises in French cars, and will almost certainly have the bits you need :)

Edit: Also, yes please to pics :)

I wish I could put both engines on the desk, but the new engine is already in the car, turbo has been swaped already. Just got to try and prize the sumps off with out breaking them.

I live in essex (clacton on sea) leyton buzzard is about a 2 and half houf drive for me which I don't mind doing if it means I can save and bring back my 406. I brought the engine from anglia peugeot centre ltd in norwich. I will try them again and if need be I will get in contact with the other yard thank you every one for help
