hi all, from london any advise appreiciated
Hi all, very excited as I've just treated myself to a 1998 td 406 estate for my new dog car lol and just found this site and thought it might be just the place to get some advice on the little problems I have on my new beauty lol
1 how to get dents out? Thinking of trying the compressed air method.
2 passenger side electric window doesn't work
3 electric sunroof tilts but does slide open?
4 radio cassette doesn't work so id like to either get the proper one from the breakers or just install a hew cd player.
5 the digital mileage on the dash isn't working.
Other than that's she's great lol so any advice on how to correct the above problems would be great as im going to start this little project tomorrow, thanx in advance :-) rich

Hi all, after giving the car a good clean today and going over her I've also noticed few more probe which I could d with some help with.
6) right back passenger side sill missing along with back window sill
7) one tail light bulb on each side isn't working an after a careful look I think I'll need to order both new connectors again, so literally two new back lights oh on the better side at least its not the actual outside moulds I need just the electrical bulb connector :-)
7) also the central locking does not lock the front passenger door.
So if anyone knows any good bargain places to get these bits either online or local London breakers that would be great also just any advice on the above questions would be great, thanx in advance, rich

Hi Rich,welcome to the forum.
You just showed up in Christmas-New Year time so there werent many people on forum
Congratulations on your purchase.
Most of your problems are conected witj electricity,so calling a good electrician could sole your problems easy.
Try to put some WD40 in locks,do you hear some sound in lock
before puting new connectors, did you check if bulbs are ok
put some new radio in it,with usb its the best

Richard,
Welcome in matey,
With neither the window or central locking working on the same door I might be inclined to check whether the wiring/connectors have been messed with.
Power to that door? Does the leecy window switch light up on the passenger door? also can you here the motors if you lock the car from that door?
If the answer is no I'd take the door card off and check all wiring and connectors as a first step.
As for the mileage display have a very close look and see if the numbers are there but very dim as it's probably the backlight, easy enough to change the bulbs with a little patience and some torx screwdrivers. If the display is knackered just fit a new set of clocks from the breakers, I'm pretty sure the mileage isn't recorded on the clocks on a D8 (Mk 1). Have a search for D8 clock removal and there is a very good how-to in the knowledge base. If you have any issues with speedo/rev counter which affects quite a few D8 diesels it's a good time to get handy with the soldering iron while the clocks are out, again the knowledge base has all the details you need.
As for the stereo, there are only 2 advantages to keeping the standard stereo;
1) the column stalk saves you reaching 'all the way' over to the stereo
2) You can get test match special on it as it has LW reception
Reason 2 is the only thing that made me cling on to mine for 6 months but MP3 won in the end
On the subject of test match special CMJ died over the holidays after losing his battle with cancer - most of you won't have a clue who he is/was but I thought I'd mention it for the few who may be interested.
Missing sill? I assume you mean the rubber strip and not the entire sill, if you're lucky you'll find one in a breakers but you'll need new clips, pennies for the clips from a pug dealer but I'm pretty sure the seal itself is silly money so a tour of scrapyards is your best bet. Try to pull/cut the clips when you get it off the donor car as I totally fubared one trying to wrestle it from a donor car.
Rear lights - I assume bulbs have been checked and btw you only get 1 fog and 1 reverse light on the back even tho there are bulb holders in the light assembly. Which bulbs aren't working, if it's the same one on both sides it could be a problem else where, if you can find new bulb holders in a breakers try testing them there and then. Most breakers will be happy to let you test stuff as long as you don't leave. If it's brake lights and you're not getting the high level light either you'll need to check the pedal switch.
Sun roof sounds like a knackered motor, might be worth popping the interior light out and checking for water ingress around the aeriel, pretty common and easily fixed by either changing the aeriel base or refitting the existing one on a bead of tiger seal or silicone. Be very careful removing the light as they get very brittle over time, not overly expensive to replace at the dealers if you have the same ham fists as me (yes I speak from experience
) Personally I wouldn't be to bothered about the sun roof not working but do check whether water is getting in as it'll save further issues and if you're careful not to break anything it costs nothing to fix.

Hi & welcome to the forum, Richard.
Nothing I can usefully add to the suggestions so far, but keep us posted on progress and I'm sure we'll get there in the end.....
Regarding the rear lights, are your problems to do with the ones on the tailgate, back wings, or both?

I knew about the single fog light, (which I think's a good idea), but not the reversing light - I thought they were both supposed to work, but only the offside works on my bro' s D8 estate. Pretty sure both of mine do.gumby6371 wrote: btw you only get 1 fog and 1 reverse light on the back even tho there are bulb holders in the light assembly.

Single or twin reversing lights may be a trim level dependant thing then?

Mine definitely both work, but I don't have access to a D8 wiring diagram to check - does anyone else have one?

Hi all and thanx for the replies, I was worried I may have wrote something wrong an offended people..
Ok solved few problems an figured few others out now just need to fix them.
1) rear fog lights working but back right tail light bulb holder im sure is knackered so just trying to source one as I've been going round scrap yards all week.
I sorted the window seal for a pound at a5 scrap yard and now have the radio working but i need a code for it
The elec window Mmmm well I cany t hear any motor so im presuming that's died.
And I've worked out the problem in the sunroof, basically the rail system inside the sunroof iw broken so im trying to source that as well now, other than that she's a beuty. Lol
Yea i tired the compressed air on the dents Lool, she's abit tatty all over but I'll get her there slowly but surely.
So I need to order the bulb holder for the tail light if anyone knows anywhere decent?
Tomorrow I plan on opening the door up and also sorting out a rear window wiper as it doesn't have one, then next I'll get a decent cd player and sort out the dash :-) fingers crossed..

Dont condemn the window motor just yet,
Get the door card off and check theres power getting to it,
it might not be the Motor,

so did you have any luck with the Air duster turned upside down, and the hairdryer method,?
it never worked for me anyway, best way is to get behind the dent and roll it out,
the Airduster method is B/s as far as ican see, had 2 atempts at it and gave up and i went back to the old skool method,

Haha yea the air duster method was crap for me too, I tried it on few dents with no joy although the science behind the method does kinda make sense,.
Thanx for saying about the back light on the dash as I didn't realize but yes its there although very dimly so I'll get a bulb for that too and get that done maybe Monday.
I opened up the door to day but it was a sad sight lol, basically the window is being held into position at the moment by being wedged into the wrong grid part as it looked like the white plastic thing that usually raises or holds the window in position was broken off just sitting inside the door so someone had a try and just let it bodged in the process crewing the central locking, the light on the elec window button is now on but obviously now working because the window is not fixed in properly but I couldn't hear the motor working. Also the cables running to the door lock look abit screw as the actual inside lck button on the handle doesn't work an I have to lock that door wih the key as its the only way it works at the moment ohh fun times :-)
