So, how much is it worth then?

Post by Captain Jack »

So that black 407 2.2L petrol I was looking at has been sold as I was too slow making decisions but it got me thinking as to how much my 406 is worth. Here are the details:

Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI 110bhp Executive
Registered Sept 2002 on 52 plate
Had it since 2008 from 61k, now on 147k
Black leather, no tears, rear seats had little use so are in great condition. Driver's seat showing signs of wear, passenger seat less so
White clock dials(!)
New clutch, cam-belt, water pump and engine mounts a few months ago, courtesy of jasper5 (done around 5k since)
Everything works, albeit with that odd steering rattle which I put up with years. Not had a chance to take a closer look with the festivities and crap weather but it doesn't affect the drive at all - it's just annoying!
MOT due this month, so assume it comes with one!
Remapped but would be returned to "stock"
Would be serviced before sale

Bad points: a couple of shopping trolley dings, one rather obvious on the front wing but no paint broken and can probably be buffed out
There are some rust bubbles developing on the lip of the bonnet
Front brake pads would need changing in the next few months

I am guessing £1000-ish?

If it's any use I sold my exec in pretty much the same fettle (minus the clutch change) in March 2009 for £1200.00 - the car was 10 years old when I sold it.

Being in super-super clean condition is an absolute must when selling the 406 - right down to having clean carpets with those 'just hoovered' patterns in the material. My buyer told me it was the cleanliness that clinched the sale as he knew he could just come and fetch the thing and take it home to use everyday.

Don't sell yourself short here, make sure you emphasise the expensive work that's already been done. I don't think I'd mention the remap in the advert - this can put some buyers off.

Regarding the 407 you saw - it's surprising sometimes when you see an obvious good 'un that they get snapped up quickly and you have to be swift :o I put a deposit down on the Volvo without seeing the car in the flesh to give me time to jump in the car and whip over to Birmingham to see it.

Thanks Welly, I'd certainly clean it out etc. prior to advertisement - if it comes to that. We'll see if it passes MOT without too many issues. Oh, it also has 3 new tyres!

What's your Vulva like to own? Other than the dreaded 25mpg "economy"...

Some intersting ones:

407 2.2 HDI
407 Coupe 2.2L petrol - similar price and mileage as the one I saw but newer
407 2.2L petrol - a bit old and pricey but less than 10k. I wonder what it was doing all this time?

captain that last one is only bout 10 miles away from me so i could pop over and see it in the flesh, get some pic's, vin number etc to see what it left the factory with etc if you want me too.
Autoparc cars are always wayover the top on adverts but much easier to knock down when stood in front of the salesman

http://www.tynesideautoparc.co.uk/

also might be an idea if you pop over to www.peugeotforums.co.uk to see what peoples thoughts are on the options your after, you might even recognize a few names over there

let me know if you want me to take a look at that one at autoparc

Hi trem, thanks for the offer but I will probably stick with 406 for now, unless the MOT fails it.

Petrols are attractive because they seem to be incredibly cheap for the year and mileage. No way would I get a diesel for that much with the same specs and mileage. Plus petrol itself is cheaper (for some odd reason).

no bother.
i recently had a vauxhall astra petrol for a couple of weeks and because of that experience i will never own another petrol engined car, it was sh*te, no torque at all and reving up to around 6k is alien to me, only got about 28mpg as well so was forver at the forecourt (now i know how welly feels)
It was an SRI as well but that just made it feel like it was on leafsprings, had a stupid electric handbrake that allowed the car to roll down my driveway about 8 feet, left it in gear after that

Rant over..................I HATED that damned thing

Tell me about it

The mondingo petrol has 145bhp, so similar to my 406, but by god, no guts at all, no torque, and as I do loads of short journeys, i'm lucky to get 20mpg :(
Lovely car, but by god, do I miss the power, torque and mpg of my HDi

Hey rapport, you could be right. I sold my 145k '98 2.1TD for £950 privately in 2008, so this one is similar but has more toys, so was hoping for something a little more.

The ONLY petrol I drove which was worth its salt was a er... J reg Vauxhall Astra 2.2 SRI. That had the torque similar to a diesel, so was hoping that a more modern 2.2L petrol in a Pug would be of a similar stature. Plus they seem to be more simple than modern diesels which are a death-trap.

Toys add zero value if you px. I have top spec passat. Have been looking at various other cars. Mine has lots of toys fsh new tyres etc....

These point will only help if you sell private a dealer will either just trade or add £500-£1500 to the px price and sell it :-):-):-)

I have a decent spec passat for sale if you are interested? Just need to decide what to buy. Been looking at 5 series touring 535d's its just the running costs going from 2.0 to a 3.5 :-(:-(
