Seen this the other day.
I have drempt and drempt about doing this!
I love general day to day cars with four wheel drive! It angers me that there aren't more available!

Unfortunately the gear ratios would be an arse and I imagine it would be a pig to drive with a top speed of ~90mph and poor fuel economy.
Maybe you could get some custom made diffs to alter the ratios?

We can't do this to the 406, reason being is that the 405 uses a rear torsion beam. What ever one wheel does the other does. It has one metal tube instead of springs. When the suspension compresses it 'twists' to torsion bar. It's an okay system but compared to the independent setup we have on our 406's, it's a bit like running around with your shoes tied together.

If I was to do this conversion I think a V6 would be in order 8)

It got to £720 last time, but didn't make the reserve....

Strangely enough, I was asking the same question about a 406 transplant, but I guess if a petrol can break the transmission, it won't handle 300 lb/ft for too long.

Shame.

Imagine ~~ gingerly reaching for that "button in the boot" to raise the rear suspension.........gently pressing it........watching carefully as the rear of the car slowly creaks and rises........then comes a CLICK CLICK TICK TICK TICK PHEWWWWWW TSCHHHHH a loud groan comes as the rear end falls awkwardly to rest on the rear springs and finally a puddle of greenish fluid trickles over the block pavers to settle in the flower bed :|

Seriously for a minute, a great effort but I can't see it being easy to live with, even when they were fairly new they weren't that strong.

That reminds me of a top of the range Cistern bx iborrowed for a few hours off a mate of mine,
only had it 3 hours and ibroke it, he got it back with no brakes /pwr steering and a bit scraped underneath
engine had to be removed to fix the burst Hydro-spastic spension pipes,
igave him the value of it and weighed it in,

The Mi16x4 has one sphere (ala Citroen BX) to ensure that the rear differential maintains clearance off the body - a very tricky active self levelling suspension system!

They really did the full monty on that model then  probably one of those cars that costs more to manufacture than it's price tag suggests.

Probably - it was marginally slower than the FWD version but offered more grip. Basically a product which answered a question to which nobody asked in the first place...

That said, a Mi16x4 was probably similar money to a Sierra Sapphire Cosworth back in the day...

There was a phase of 4x4 saloons back in the late 80's (when everyone was rich) Vauxhall/GM did a Cavalier 4x4 2.0 'L' which was bargain-basement spec but had 4wd (which Vauxhall weren't really known for at the time :? ) again, one of those cars which spent more time on a ramp being fixed than actually on the road :|
