Well you can blame all the scum bags that used to go about on false plates for that I'm afraid.

It's like that for good reason but does seem harsh to us law abiding folk but then since when did criminals care about our daily lives and our insurance costs

You could even point at your car parked right outside the shop window in a kinda "please just copy the numbers on the existing plate" way but still no good - you need all the docs and stuff

I got my last one for the caravan from the sunday market,no docs needed and all they do is put a sticker on the back saying "show plates only" which does seem to make a mockery of it. :?

Apparently it can be an MOT failure if the plate hasn't got B.S. AU 145d along with the postcode and name of who made it marked on them.

My Bmw has passed the last 4 years with blank ones,it would really be nit picking if they did fail cars without the BS number etc,I think as long as there legally spaced and the right size lettering that should be enough.

I always go to Halfords with my driving licence and the V5. Always do it instantly and the halfords logo and bs number is very lightly etched into the plate so it barley visible! They are cheaper than a local factors too!

How much do halfrauds charge then Sam? Mine were £8 each at the local factors and I want another pair, been considering getting ebay ones but if halfrauds are cheap I may go there, trade card discount?

Me? An ex-employee of the aforementioned company? Sorted out with a trade card by a friendly ex-colleague? I can neither confirm or deny that rumour
