Removed my EGR blanking plate...

Post by Bailes1992 »

Loving the smoothness and lag free power of my EGR free Mondeo I failed to notice the coolant tempreture until yesterday.

My Mondeo is usually at operating tempreture by 3-5 miles. It was taking over 10 miles to reach operating temp with the EGR blanked off.

I have a feeling that over time it would cause more wear on the engine than the EGR causes by filling the oil with soot.

So I removed the blanking plate

I'm going to get the inlet manifold cleaned and the EGR and keep changing the oil every 6k.

My worry is that if the coolant is taking much longer to heat up then the oil will be much colder for longer which will increase wear on the turbo and engine.

Indeed. Didnt notice it much first but once it came cooler it's obvious. The EGR water jacket feeds the cabin heater matrix, so brrrrrr.

Mine is staying disabled until next back end to see if there is a change in oil colour. The coupe club reckon the oil will be a lot cleaner on the second change after disabling.

Long term, I'm thinking of enabled in winter and disabled in summer, depending on journeys. E.g., if short journeys then enable, if long journeys then disable. Since it's only a case of pulling and bunging a single pipe it's pretty simple to swap over. Could do with a switch

On my way to work yesterday morning my coolant didn't get upto temp for 20 miles!

Thats why I bit the bullet and removed it.

It's definatley a bit more lumpy when you pull it through the revs but it's not any slower I don't think.

Sam pop over to the other pug site, someone over there had a mondeo that took awhile to get to temp, and says something about it having 2 thermostats

That's the Mk3 Mondeo!
With the EGR fully functional it gets upto tempreture after just 3 miles!

Newer diesels introduce exhaust gasses into the inlet to warm the engine up and also maintain coolant temperature when the car is under little load / in a cold climate.

Mine doesn't take that long. It takes a bit longer to get warm air out of the blower, and I'm definitely up to 90 and oil out of the blue area after 8 miles.

Get it blanked trem :) (BTW how is the new 407?)
