In terms of running costs, ours averages around 43mpg, managing nearer 50mpg on extended motorway runs.

They are lovely to drive, 136bhp stock and can be remapped to around 180bhp. The Execs are very well specced with lots of toys :)

Take it! They're a lovely drive compared to the 90. The biggest difference is the variable geometry turbo which means you don't get the sudden kick in the back (although peak torque is at 1500 on these engines, not at 2000 as on the 2.0 -- this is because they have a longer stroke) and they keep pulling well past 3000.

The 2.2 costs more to tax, to insure, and unless you're on the motorway all the time it will use a bit more fuel. On the other hand, the 90 is exceptionally slow and I know just how difficult it is to get it moving and how hard it works when you have three passengers. So you pays your money you takes your choice. But I'd have the 2.2 :)

You can get a lot of help for the 2.2 engine from the Coupe club, who understand it really well. A number of members on there offer the "super tractor" treatment too, if you don't fancy doing it yourself.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Most of my driving is motorway i do 100 miles per day on the A1 would the economy be much difference over a month also i do give 3 other guys a lift to work but they pay their fair share, i was a little worried in case they had any inherent problems the 90 is cheap but is not very nice running and driving compared to my old 110 saloon

Hi, I have just done what you are thinking about. I had a 90 which was quite gutsy round town - quick away from the lights and 48mpg, but crap on the bypass. It took so long to wind the thing up that I would get quite frustrated with it. It did an average of 40mpg with 4 adults 1 child and luggage for a week around Devon which is respectable.
My 2.2 exec however is completely different, seems a bit slower pulling away but ever so graceful when you stick your foot down. It feel slow on a country lane but when you look at the speedo you are going really quick..! I get 38mpg in mine at the mo ( and I do love the acceleration from 2000 to 3500 revs - it bloody flies...) but I think I have a sensor fault somewhere - the 2.2 is controlled mostly by vacuums and can be troublesome. My DPF and EGR have been removed so no future concerns regarding anti-pollution fault ( £100 for DPF removal and £100 for EGR removal ) worth it if the 2.2 is a bargain to begin with.
I do miss the 90 as it was better round town and cheaper to run, but the 2.2 is a good all rounder, I really like it too and the toys and leather are nice, not in a kinky way....??

I'm on my second 2.2, having clocked up 100k miles, in 4.5 years between the two, probably about 2/3 of that in remapped 180 bhp guise and I wouldn't want any other flavour of 406. The original dogmobile was wonderfully reliable, good to drive and gave a great sense of security. Ended many a long journey, patting the steering wheel and saying thank you.....

My current one is shaping up fairly well and I'm getting to grips with it's few flaws, (rear passenger window fixed today and both sunrooof drains unblocked). My bro's veg fuelled 1.9 has earned my grudging respect - it does surprisingly well, but twice as much power and a quarter of the noise level, gets my vote every time.

Currently averaging 43/44 mpg, £195 road tax, £300 insurance so cheap and great fun. 8)
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)
