Is this worth fixing?

Post by FarmerPug »

I got the old carina running today to see if its worth fixing up for the Mot i can see some obvious problems

- the windscreen is delaminating and has 3 noticeable stone chips
Image
- the gearbox needs wrestled to get the car to change gear, its not the clutch, the gearbox just needs swapped
- the carpets are muddy, and the seats and any other fabric oily, mouldy seatbelts and a yucky sticky steering wheel
- the handbrake does not work
- there is a hole in the rear wheelarch:

The engine after a blast with the pressure washer:

Heres a video of it running:

Its a 1997 2.0 Turbo Diesel with 214,000 potentially clocked miles, the interior heater doesnt seem to heat up, the drivers mirror is stuck, its been smoked in and the bumpers look like they have been used to slow down an angle grinder disc more than once.

But i have this spares car available:

And this one, which is actually my dads old car from well over 10 years ago, some how an uncle bought it, then some eejit in a tractor that couldnt drive reversed a trailer on top of the car, it was running fine when this happened, and the engine bay wasnt drove over:

If i could id try and use as many parts off the other two cars, both have got gearboxes and i believe the carina gearboxes are the same on the turbo and non turbo cars, that bit of rust and the windscreen are the only slightly ackward things to fix, i suppose i could cut out the same part in one of the other two and weld it into this which would get it through the test, i cant see any other significant rust on this car, the drivers door has a bit on the bottom but thats just cosmetic.

I agree with you on the first bit, i hate the shape of them and the bargain basement plastic interior. But taxi drivers here love them theres still plenty driving about.

Ill check the back seat, what about the rust hole, do you think an arthur daley style bit of isopon would do, or is this an area they prod with a screwdriver in the test, i havent actually climbed under the car but the rest seems acceptable, the sills are solid, as are all the suspension mounting points.

The reg plate, LLZ thats not far off "lozz" :cheesy:

lol, yeah thats what they where over here Taxis
they all had fake tiger fur seat covers lol,

There crap to drive but reliable,

not many left over here, just a handful,

ihad one for a year or so, weighed it in in the end there wasnt much of it left underneath to weld too

if its solid enough underneath get it in for a mot and see what it needs

give us a shout on that reg plate if you end up binning the car

Ok the parts are free but after you've fixed it and moted it will it be worth anything? Enough to cover the time you spent on it? I suspect you'd make more if you weighed all 3 in as they are...

so i had a look under the car, well i didnt even need to go that far, i couldnt lift it up, put the jack under the jacking points and jacked the car up, then heard a crunchy sound and the car coming back down, rotten sills on both sides, i cut the drivers side sill out its rusty up to a point and if a good section was found it could be welded in, under the seat is spotless, bar the dirt and sweetie wrappers you expect to find, and the £2 coin :cheesy:

I tried out the £17 lidl angle grinder today, it did a good enough job, the blade though disappeared very quickly

I dont think its worth fixing anymore, sure if it was something i liked such as an old 305 and i wanted to restore it then it would be ok, but an old carina isnt worth the effort.

About the reg plate if your interested lozz its available, the cars still in my uncles name so i can see what log books he has, do you know what way reg plates are transferred?

Not sure on the Reg transfers, iwill look into it,
if its easy enough iwill buy it off you, not sure how it works tbh,

If your vehicle is MOT'd and taxed you will be able to sell the registration mark. :(

If the registration mark is on a valid certificate (Retention Document or Certificate of Entitlement) you will be able to sell the registration mark.

If at the point of sale and transfer the donor vehicle is taxed but not MOT'd you will be able to sell the registration mark (the expired MOT will be required). If at the point of sale and transfer the donor vehicle was taxed in the proceeding 6 months you will be able to sell the registration mark (the expired MOT certificate will be required).

2.d) NI Vehicle – UK vehicle :(
This number plate transfer also involves the V317 form but will have to go through two different vehicle offices before completion. The application will need to be submitted to Coleraine DVLNI office for the first leg of the transfer and will be completed and dispatched from a DVLA local vehicle office.

You will need to submit the following documents (for each vehicle):

• V5C Registration documents (or completed new keeper’s supplements with V62 form)

• MOT certificate(s) if applicable.

• Photo copy of UK Valid tax discs (or V10 form along with certificate of motor insurance and appropriate payment for new tax disc.)

• Original NI Tax Disc (or V10 form along with certificate of motor insurance and appropriate payment for new tax disc.)

• Cheque for £80 made payable to the department of transport.

The Donor vehicle (the one that the registration is coming off) will receive a registration mark.
