Hi from Norwich, East Anglia. Q about 406's

Post by Jay2112 »

Hi to all you Peugeot owners.
My dad owns a Peugeot 405 estate, L reg which is coming up to its working life. He's a builder and all though has a small van, the size of the boot has been large enough to accommodate the cement mixer when the van is unavailable.
He retires in August and try as I might I have tried to talk him around to a Rover 75 Tourer, as I have a Rover 75, and have been a member of the 75&ZT owners Club since Feb 2010, and have got to know the cars pro and cons quite well.
He is addiment that when the car become BER he wants another Peugeot, which is all well and good. It has to be an estate as he does collectors fairs as a hobbie and needs all the boot space he can get.
He has been driving second hand Peugeot estates for over 20 years and have always been old high milers. The Peugeot garage dealer at the end of his road where he gets them, do over price there cars a bit and I feel, gets taken advantage of a bit, but being a bit stuborn, still goes back to them and pays more money he hasnt got (only knows how to check the water and oil levels).
He retires in August, and I would like to suprise him by getting him a reliable Diesel 406 estate 90/110 within a £1000 budget (the less gadgets/price, the better). I am not that mechanic minded so I thought I would ask what to look out for when buying a 406 and/or if anyone knows of a decent 406 coming up for sale around June/July time.
I appreciate any input/advice/, and if I can help in any way regerding Rover 75's please dont hesitate to PM me.
Best Regards
Jason

Hi Jason & welcome to the forum. 8)

Within that budget you should be able to get a decent 406 HDi estate with moderate mileage. I suggest keeping a close eye on eBay and Autotrader etc to get a 'feel' for average prices. I would think you could get a 01/02 car with say 120k - 140k if you're prepared to do a bit of homework, (don't let that sort of mileage put you off - they're good for at least 200k and I'm guessing he won't clock up massive mileage.

You never know, you might find someone on here selling, but it's not that common.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

What a funny combination: 4 clock dash, sat nav, and steel wheels. I guess in 2003 it was a case of whatever parts are left. You pays your money, you takes your choice.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I think the 4 clock dash and steelies are normal LX spec, and the sat nav was an optional extra?

Thanks for the link nutski. That is the sort of thing I am looking for, but funds wont allow untill June/July time.

As for the garage, I dont want to name it. They do a good job with repairs etc, but like many garages (and I understand they have overheads), second hand cars can be a bit on the pricey side compaired to private sellers. Members sell cars on the Rover 75 website and I was asking in case some one with a Peugeout background and some knowlege, knows of one or has one to sell in the middle of the year.
Best Regards
Jason.

If closer to June time i hear of anyone local selling anything i'll let you know, normally something around depending on if you want local or are happy to travel (i did 270 mile round trip to get the Estate, over 400 to get my Coupe!)

I only wondered about the garage as i'm very particular about where i take my car, i have a 45 minute drive from Norwich to out near Diss to see my mechanic, he is a proper french car enthusiast and i won't let anyone else near either of our cars

Thanks nutski. I understand about other people tinkering with your wheels. Luckly the few people I know live local. Have to say the 406 is a fine looking car
