Peugeot 307SW 110 HDi
Have been offered a relatively favourable deal on a 307SW, but it comes as a bit of a project if I take it on.
Previous benchamark before this morning was a 2004 Zafira Elegance with 82k which is priced at £3k. The deal on that was my Partner + £1800 & the car would come with a full PDi & service by their own workshop (which would incorporate anything which would look due to be replaced in the next 6mths) & they would sort out my plate transfer. Windows already tinted & car is very clean overall, but there's no tax (£195 for 12mths & insurance will charge me an extra £170 for it.
Overall cost to change then - £2165 & relatively hassle free. No cambelt to worry about as DTi engine is chain driven.
This 307 has 87k & is priced at £2.5k. The deal on this is my car + £1000. It has a fresh MOT on it & tax until the end of April, but cosmetically is slightly below par (for me anyway). Silver roof rails & door handles are grim (£50 to paint roof rails maybe, chrome door handle covers less than £10), leather covering on the steering wheel is destroyed (£50 & I can fit myself), under dash trim panels hanging & a couple of straps seem to have come out of the (green) seats. Also, the trip computer button isn't working, so we're probably also looking at £200 for a new COMM unit. Plus it needs a REALLY good scrubbing inside & out. What it does have going for it though is that it looks like it has been very well kept mechanically & the salesman said that the guy that they got it from was very much that type of person. Anything mechanical got replaced at the first sign of wear or at manufacturer intervals. The very new looking belts & what I think was a tensioner (still shiny & silver) were testament to this. Not sure on the cost to change the insurance yet, but Confused.com says that the annual premium is £20 less than the Partner, so it should cost less than £100 to change over. Then there's the big headache with a 110HDi 307 - the dreaded FAP. There's a place about an hour down the road that does a DPF delete & remap altogether for £300 & say £50 to get the guts knocked out of it.
Overall cost to change on that - £1920 (included £170 for 12mths tax) & a lot of hard work, but still keeping with the brand & I get that sense of achievement when finished as most of what needs doing I can actually do myself. That & a funky green interior.
Anybody got any input that may help? I keep hearing stories about how bad the 307 is, but after a discussion with our local Pug specialist, he said that when you consider how many 307s were sold the actual percentage of bad ones isn't all that bad.

My better half has the 1.6 HDI and it is a very nice car to drive but the 1.6 is by no means a pocket rocket, suffers quite badly from turbo lag. A defap and remap should go a long way towards sorting that tho.
When I researched them they do need good quality oil and regular servicing to prevent turbo failures, not costly if you're happy to get your hands dirty.
Fuel economy is good amd it has a quality feel about it, flimsy plasticy wings are the only exception I've found.
The 2 litre is the better engine but for mainly town driving the 1.6 has enough go about it
As for the trip the other halfs S has the button but no functionality so it may just require turning on.
Still trying to talk her into a de-fap and getting someone to activate the bells and whistles but I'd give the 307 a thumbs up.

Can't speak for the HDis but our 2003 1.6 petrol 307 S has been spot on. Bought it at a year old and 8k miles, now on 80k miles

Re: Peugeot 307SW 110 HDi
My daughter has an elderly 1.6 petrol 307, which she loves and has been trouble free, apart from a dodgy gear linkage cable, (which daddy fixed with a lever / cables from a scrappy for £50 delivered). This is a regular problem, (judging by all the replacement ads and 5 mins googling), but easy to spot - shows up as excessive lever travel.
I've driven a 110 breifly and it seemed lively, but the owner was disappointed with fuel consumption - he was getting about 45 on a daily commute from Coventry to Huntingdon.
I've done a couple of std defapped files for 307 owners, but only one of them ever confirmed whether it worked or not, (it did).
(Annoying when peoplle have the brass neck to ask for something for nothing and can't be asked to say 'ta').

Re: Peugeot 307SW 110 HDi
Sorry, should've said that it's a 2.0 110. It definitely has the trip computer as the display itself is currently showing a reset MPG display (which apparently means that the button innards are jammed on as it has reset the counters), but the COMM unit itself seems a little worse for wear as the indicators are a little clunky compared to the ones on the Partner (which I know had a replacement unit at some point as it was incorrectly configured).gumby6371 wrote:My better half has the 1.6 HDI and it is a very nice car to drive but the 1.6 is by no means a pocket rocket, suffers quite badly from turbo lag. Having done the math, I think I'll probably leave both. The Zafira is 2 years newer for not much more money, but I'd actually prefer a Zafira with the black rubbing strips rather than colour-coded as the painted ones are susceptible to car park damage. The 307 would be nice, but I think I'd rather get one that didn't need so much work to start with.
Have to be honest, the Zafira is a bit of a favourite as the extra seats are constantly stashed in the boot whereas the 307 seats would have to have a home when they aren't being used. The thing that steers me back to a 307 (or a 406 if one comes up) is the comfy seats with individual armrests & climate control.
There isn't a desperate need for the 7 seats yet, but I am mindful of the fact that the MOT on the Partner runs out in June & if I try to PX with bugger all MOT I'm going to get peanuts for it. If I then get a fresh MOT I run the risk of spending out on a car that's going to be leaving soon.

Re: Peugeot 307SW 110 HDi
This one appeared to be a bit abused on the interior, but interiors are something that I can do myself (as seen with the 406). Funnily enough though, there's another appeared on Autotrader today. Same distance, but in the opposite direction from here. Same colour interior & exterior, similar mileage & the same price. If that one is tidier, but still in good mechanical order it may be worth a look next weekend. Can't do this weekend as I'm back at work Sunday & don't want to disappear out all day on my last day home with the little man.lozz wrote:Becareful with the 307 sw waue

You boys will know SO much more than I ever could but, I have heard a lot about the diesels 307's (not good stuff either) so, just be careful and as already mentioned, make sure you have PP2000!
