Renault 21 Savanna

Post by waue1978 »

Had a blast from the past while hunting through Autotrader earlier & found one of these for sale within 40 miles. Totally different direction than what I've been previously looking at & also too old for my private plate, but I'm trying to work out the feasibility of running something like that as a 2nd car & perhaps persuading the boss to learn again in the Partner.

Also, that video that Sonia posted up with the Zafira getting a*se-raped by a Ford Cargo has made me a bit nervous about the conventional 7 seaters. Anyone that remembers them will know that the older 7 seat estates like the 505 & 21 Savannas still had a bit of space between the back end & the rearmost passengers.

The real downside though, is that the 21 I've found is only a 5 seater. My question is this; is there anybody here that has ever owned or had a close inspection of Renault 21 estates that would be able to confirm whether the extra seats could be fitted into the back of a 5 seater version? I know it would be easy to assume that they do as it would make more sense to just make the same bodyshell & just add the extra bits in, but unfortunately the standard Peugeot 307 estate (not SW) & Fiat Doblo are proof that not all manufacturers take the sensible option as neither of these can have the extras retrofitted.

Still not given up on a 406 coming back as there's a one owner low mile Hdi in Swindon that I might go & examine tomorrow, but the good ones don't seem to hang around for too long. There was a 2.0 petrol GLX Family that appeared on Autotrader this morning, but by the time I'd actually got an answer from the phone number on the advert (6:30 tonight) he already had somebody on the way round to pick it up!

Hi, I remember looking at Savannas when searching for a big estate car for myself and thinking the same as you - there is still a massive boot even with 7 seats. Very good indeed.
There were 2 reasons why I didn't choose one: 1 - no diesel ones to be found, only petrol ones, 2 - its a Renault so only a matter of time before it goes wrong. Much more reliable than newer ones ( I see so many Scenics broken down ) but still a Renault.
They are often found in driveways covered in moss should you want one. :|

Where in the listing does it say 5 seats? Or have you been on the dog n bone already? Or were these fixed seats and you can tell just by looking at the pics?

I've already spoken to the guy selling it. Think the best course of action will be to go & see it & have a good poke around under the boot carpet for some fixings or holes. Although even if it does turn out that they can be retrofitted, actually finding a set of the rear seats could well be a sticking point anyway. Have put in a couple of parts requests on find-a-part type websites & nobody has any breaking.

It's nice that someone was paying attention to the Zafira video... Good man!

They are real old Renault arn't they... I think it depends on the seating position because as I put in my blog, in my estate the children are tucked even further into the car, where as the 505s had forward facing = leg room = children more near the impact zone, which is what would worry me.
That being said, I imagine converting it would be a bigger job than todays 406 conversion...

Swindon? let me come

Phoned this morning & it isn't actually there yet, but apparently I was already the second caller on it. Supposed to be arriving today or tomorrow. Hopefully taking Jack to Bovington tomorrow as he wants to see the tanks, but if it isn't pi**ing down Friday (& if it isn't already sold) we should be able to have a look then. Not too happy with the colour though - it's silver.

Those old Renaults were never known for their rigidity. I'd look elsewhere if you are after safety...

Spotted that one a couple of days ago. Hasn't got it in yet. I'm hoping he's used a "library pic" as that has a rather nasty dent on the nearside above the rear bumper. The one in Swindon now has pics on Autotrader, but the Ebay listing for the same car has ended, so may have been sold already.

Looked at a Doblo Family (7 seat version) today on the way back from Bovington Tank Museum. Really wish traders would learn to advertise cars as having the right equipment. Was advertised as having air con, but when we got there he admitted that it didn't have it.

How much for a Previa/Espace? If you want to carry 7 - do it properly.

I only need the extra seats for occasional use when we get visitors from Ireland. The rest of the time there's only the 4 of us, so would be a waste to drive something so big & bulky. Have contemplated getting full size MPVs & even a decent condition minibus, but it's just not worth the extra hassle for us to have something so big.

Wouldn't touch an Espace or Previa anyway though. There's a hell of a lot of spares or repair Espaces over here (& not that old either) whilst a diesel Previa would cost too much to buy & run.

That 406 in Swindon seems to have gone up by £200 this morning...

I'm sorry, I appear not to be grasping this whole ''properly'' business.
What is it about the 7 seater estates people have problems with?

Watch that video THEN get back to me about how conventional 7 seaters are supposedly ''safer''
