What exactly does Rapier mean?
New to 406's but i want to buy one
what is the difference between rapier and ones that arent rapier?

Re: What exactly does Rapier mean?
The wife's got a Rapier, and these are the things (off the top of my head) which it has above poverty spec:
AC climate control
electric windows
electric mirrors
automatic wipers
ABS
emergency brake assist (even my V6s didn't have this!)
front fog lamps
RF key central locking
side airbags I think
radio stalk on the steering column
Peugeot cars don't (or at least didn't) have many options on top of the standard trim levels.
What it doesn't have are:
leather seats (+door cards)
heated seats
memory seats/mirrors
cd player
cd changer
cruise control
headlamp washers
anchor points for mats
sports suspension
interior protection alarm. don't know if it has any alarm actually...
sunroof
traction control
jbl sound system

Re: What exactly does Rapier mean?
Look under the bonnet & if there's a hose running between the engine & airbox, it's a 110. A 90 will have the airbox directly next to the engine. Rapiers before 2002 will all be 90s anyway, but judging by the electric seats in the one you are looking at, it may not be a Rapier.Darren123 wrote:The one im looking at is so, has electric seats and windows and a few more bitsHow doy you know whether its 110bhp or 90bhp?

Re: What exactly does Rapier mean?
I think what you actually get depends somewhat on the year and whatever parts happened to be lying about the factory at the time.
The Rapier/S/SE trim levels were introduced in about 2002 and replaced L/LX/GLX/Exec.
The main differences that I've noticed compared to LX/GLX/Exec is that the Rapier has dark coloured cloth that is 'hard' instead of 'fuzzy', and dark interior trim instead of 'walnut'.
Other stuff to watch out for:
Four or five clock dash. The extra clock shows oil temperature.
Cars with sat nav have a better MFD that has two trip computers instead of one.
Y or 51 plate cars are likely to have the bad COM2000 unit. The improved units aren't much better, so check the indicator stalk carefully.
Late HDi 90s use a Siemens injection system whereas everything else uses Bosch. These are harder (more expensive) to re-map, but don't have the in-tank fuel pump. You can tell these because there's a sticker under the bonnet that says 'Siemens', and there's a fuel system priming bulb at the top left of the engine.

Well there you go. Anything is possible.

Re: What exactly does Rapier mean?
Only the last few that left the factory had EBA, it ensures *full* braking force is applied even if you think you are pushing the pedal hard enough it will over-ride it and give a bit more and flash the indicators for good measure (to give the car behind you something to marvel at as he ploughs into you).rwb wrote:Well there you go. Re: What exactly does Rapier mean?
If you press the brake pedal quickly (not necessarily forcefully, just quickly), it'll slam on the anchors full force. The pedal will go very light and crash straight to the floor when it happens. Your head will propel itself forward quite quickly toorwb wrote:BTW: What is emergency brake assist, and how can you tell if you've got it?

As above, the missus' is a 2000 model, so definitely not one of the lastWelly wrote:Only the last few that left the factory had EBA

Re: What exactly does Rapier mean?
Didn't know it was fitted to earlier cars, I tend to stay off the brakes mostly so never really tried it out.

Re: What exactly does Rapier mean?
The S, Rapier and SE didn't replace anything. They were just other trim names.
Try get a HDi 90 with a Siemens injection system. These are far superior in terms of refinement and economy!
They cost a little more to remap but mine would do 60mpg without even trying!
It was even better on fuel than my V6 auto which I had for a small stint. That amazed me!

A Rapier is a long, thin sword of Spanish origin, which was mostly used for thrusting attacks

Man that looks good! I seem to recall the H120 was the one to go for
I suspect there were basic trim levels but mugs.. sorry, customers could add stuff and even maybe leave stuff out in favour of other options, making the trim levels completely pointless.
I?m sure we had someone on here whose mates used to call his Rapier "the rapist"

Re: What exactly does Rapier mean?
The Rapier was actually there at the start of the D9s, but the very first ones were basically an LX with alloys & front fogs instead of climate control. It was only in 2000 that it became more of a model in its own right with the black interior & chrome ringed dials, but even then it was still only available with 90bhp in HDi form until 2002.rwb wrote:I think what you actually get depends somewhat on the year and whatever parts happened to be lying about the factory at the time.
