Bought another 406

Post by FarmerPug »

I got myself a cheap 2000 HDi 90 with 160k miles for £230

Its had a right old thump on the back quarterpanel, the boot does not close

It starts and drives, although its an MOT failure because of rotten sills, but it should do as another good breaker car, the alloys are the best part of the deal:

They are 16's :cheesy: it shouldnt take an awful lot to refurb them into acceptable condition.

Got yourself a bargain there, the whole car looks like it will clean up quite nice, apart from the rear quarter..!

Are you keeping it or breaking it?

Yep i bought it for breaking (spare parts and some YT videos),
it failed the mot for rust, the sills are shot, and the rear boot floor is rusted. However it drives ok, the crankshaft pulley is making its noise,
its my first time driving a 90 and its not too slow, ok it would never overtake much, but it is acceptable.

The alloys are off and in the boot of my own car, im going to get them refurbished and replace the MVK alloys i have on at the moment

Some questions about this car

behind the glovebox lid there is a plastic door/opening which is not present on my car, what is it for

what is the red square switch like thing mounted to the suspension tower on the passenger side?

Why all the rust? Was the car in a prang at some point in its life and poorly repaired?

Never heard of a boot floor in a 406 rusting out before - afterall, it's not a LR Discovery :P

Do you mean behind as in 'inside' or 'on top' of the dash area? If on top, that's where the passenger air bag lives on D8's.
If inside...I dunno!

The opening is found when you actually remove the glovebox lid completely, ie the 2 pins and drop the lid, behind it there is a wee flap held closed with a screw it comes off but i dont see any reason for this panel. The glovebox on this car is also a bit trickier to remove than mine, the screw in behind the glovebox lid that is supposed to go into a metal bracket has its head orientated so you need to get at it from the other side (ie the side you cant get at) and there is also a screw down the bottom near the middle of the dash holding it in which i didnt know about and broke

Fuel cut off switch, were peugeot afraid of these pre multiplex 406s with their at the time new HDi engines doing diesel runaway on them :cheesy:

As for the rust situation, the boot floor is rusty because the boot didnt shut (it had an accident involving a skip and an icy road), its had water sitting in it which has corroded it, the sills are rotten most likely because the car was jacked up and the drainage holes blocked, but its not really a rust bucket, here is the rusty sills:
Image
Image
Image
(hard to see but basically the sills have been half repaired and stone chip painted over but they didnt get through the MOT
Image

Under the carpet in the rear passenger footwell there is a bit of rust that wouldnt take long before it is a hole:

The engine seems to run good, the battery is knackered, and there is a possibility the coolant got a bit hot at some point:
Image

Nonetheless the plan is to continue taking off the parts, shout if there is anything that you need.

Chuck the engine in yours.
It will have a lighter crank so will be a tad more revvy and gain an extra few MPGs!

Eh? I thought all the 2 litre HDis had the same crank (which started out in the 405 1.9 XUD and was still being used in the 508 last time I checked).

Not quite! HDi90s had an XUD7 crank and HDi110s had an XUD9 crank.
