Jaguar X type

Post by FarmerPug »

I went to the auctions with a friend and he bought an X type, i am partially to blame as i said it was a nice looking car.

Its a 2004 2.0D SE with 109,800 on the clock for £1700, here are some pictures:

Are the engines in these ford, if so what sort of engine are they are they reliable?
The car initially felt a bit sluggish and put out a lot of black smoke, but responded well to getting the cobwebs blew out, i have to say they are a nice car to drive, and still feel like a jag except for the engine sound.

I don't know what i was expecting but looking at that dash it's not so much a jag but a Mondeo in drag?

What year is the Jag?
I'm pretty sure they are Ford engines, among other things, but I haven't met a Jag owner yet that says he is unhappy with it.
Its a nice car all round.

Ford Mondeo MK3 underneath. One of the best FWD chassis in it's class! Although the MK4 Mondeo will just about keep up with a MK3 in the corners it feels much more bloated and nowhere near as poised as the MK3.

The engine is your usual Puma 2.0TDCi unit found in the Mondeo and Transit.
Block is basically bulletproof but the delphi fueling system lets it down massivley!
Main issue is injectors which have to be coded to the car. Years ago this used to cost £1000+. These days you can get it done relitivley cheaply if you have a google around!

If it's smoking then a good service, clean out the inlet manifold and black off the EGR and run it on some premium diesel for a few weeks. Maybe remove the CAT too!

I've been lookin at these too in 2.5 v6 guise.. again the ford duratec engine in the petrols = bullet proof. early ones upto 2002 had a few problems so just waiting for the 2003 onwards to drop into the price range and i might go and have a serious look about.
1700 quid for a diesel one is good, if it ain't a lemon

Practically given the v6's away lol. Pick one up for about a grand. but these are 2001 _2002 which did suffer some niggles which wers ironed out 03 onwards.the diesels hold their price for obvious reasons
insurance is not a prob for me . I've put loads of quotes through comparison sites from the jags to 9_5 aeros with 250 bhp, mondeo st220 and it never over 400 quid fully comp.i am 33 tho
did put a vauxhall monero in out of interst and that came back 980 lol.

Nice car, but it's not a Jag! Was considering one before I settled on a 407.

And I think you're short on cylinders by a factor of 3 :cheesy:

The estate's about the only car newer than a 406 that I like the look of.
Wonder if you could fit a proper 2.2 diesel?

You can get them with the 2.2 and they are very good on fuel too!

Nothing 'unjag' about them. The ford pedals are the only give away.

Compared to an x300 xj6 you don't have the low driving position or nice engine noise (its diesel and not as smooth as a hdi) but the rest feels like a jag I don't see much wrong with the dash it's great except for the stalks they are obviously ford and there is a separate switch for the headlights which I don't like and no rain sensor

And it seems to add anything like Bluetooth or a cd changer which he wants you need to mess around with optical cables and have it reprogrammed by the dealer since there is no cheap pp2000 for jags
The headlights have a bit of an issue if they are on with full beam the passenger side full beam goes dim and all the indicators on that side light up very dimly which seems like an earthing fault

But your right Sam about it being a good chassis it's a very nice car to drive, great feedback from the wheel

The wood looks like it might actually be real  The rest, mmmm, shiny black plastic and silver bits and the wood (looks like hornbeam to me, I burn it regularly) - it looks like bits from a lot of different cars crammed together. I'm sure Stevie Wonder wouldn't mind 8)

Loads of buttons crammed into one plastic space is a classic jaguar trademark!
The XJ8 interior is practically identicall!

Jaguar couldn't have founded a better chassis in which to build the X-Type.
I have looked at a few 2.5 and 3.0 models with AWD but I'd have to fit it with LPG.

Those thinking of buying cheap petrol models bare in mind te 2.0 is also a V6 based on the Durtatec V6 but with smaller bores. Still a good bulletproof engine with enough power and a nice soundtrack.

Its a nicer dash than the rover 75, and a lot more reliable than one too.
The dash is fine (esepcailly when compared to the 406), i like having loads of small buttons thrown round the place, more things to press even if in the case of this car some buttons don't actually do anything.

I think the 4x4 system can be trouble on them, the front wheel drive chassis is great anyhow i cant see any need for the added expense and lower fuel economy of 4x4.
