The end of an era

Today my trusty 406 2.1TD's replacement arrived, so the time has come to say goodbye to what has been a fantastic car. The new one certainly has big boots to fill.

However, it's replacement is the following, so I'll still be around here You're not getting rid of me that easily I'm sorry to say. And of course the 2.2 HDi estate (the old Dogmobile) still soldiers on (at 203k miles now).

So this is my new 2002 HDi Coupe, Silver & Black edition, 63k on the clock. Few little niggles but it was too good to turn down. The bodywork and interior are immaculate, and it's been well looked after and regularly serviced.

Sorry to read that the 2.1 had it's marching orders Jon. What you done sold it ?
But I must admit years ago I nearly bought a 3.0 V6 coupe, lovely motors & your's looks & sounds nice mate .
I would still like one but with two young boy's it's a no goer & I can't aford to run 3 car's

dirtydirtydiesel - yes I've got a couple of people interested in it, but yes it's going to be sold. I'll be very sad to see it go, it's been with my family for 13 years and has been an absolute model of dependability and comfort. Nevertheless, the new one should prove just as good once I've sorted the niggles.

Plans for the new one are firstly a full service and changing the front ABS reluctor rings, one of them is broken and is causing the ABS to kick almost every time I press the brake.

Passenger door check strap needs replacing, and bonnet gas struts too (they don't hold the bonnet open!).

Apart from those bits it's really pretty solid, everything electrical works perfectly. Drove it 200 miles home yesterday and it's lovely, smooth and comfortable, very much a 406 in other words!

ABS rings and a full service all done, car drives very nicely now and the brakes are excellent.

New bonnet struts have arrived, will fit those tomorrow too. Pair of check straps ordered from Ade as well - seems the Coupe doors are a lot heavier than the saloon/estates and the check straps weren't beefed up to match.

Finally the blower got stuck on full yesterday morning, but thanks to this helpful post I have the replacement part on order. More lying upside down in the passenger footwell, excellent

Managed to turn off the fuel filler cap sensor in PP2000 as well, which was bleeping and had a light on the dash because it thought it was permanently open

Fitted the new blower control module as above, that solved that problem. Bit fiddly but a relatively simple fix. The transistor has just failed closed, the part is an ST H80NF55-08 for reference, and replacements (or pin compatibles) can be had. Looks like an easy job to replace it, so if anyone wants to try this if theirs fails, it's probably a reasonably amount cheaper than buying a new unit.

Bonnet struts changed, bottom engine mount done. Got new check straps from Ade but not fitted them just yet.
