What a difference a set of tyres can make to a car!

Post by Bailes1992 »

My Mother has a little bog standard 1.2 Panda! I think it's nearly the most basic car you can get!
The tried and tested buletproof 8v engine is totally gutless but still returns on average 44mpg around town! It's also what they call a 'safe' engine, this means if the cambelt fails no damage occurs to the engine  It's cheap as chips motoring for people who want a car to go from A to B with minimal fuss or outlay.
Unfortunatly though it's a bit oversprung and a little under damped and the 155/80 R13 tyres made it drive like a boat! It would understeer at what I'd call 'moderate' speeds and if it wasen't understeering or wandering it was bouncing around like a trampoline. Generally I tend to avoid driving it as much as possible as the amount of concerntration needed to maintain 70mph in a straight line is enough to give you a migrane of biblical proportions.

So yesterday my Mother chucked me the keys and her credit card and told me to go get the tyres sorted. It had 4 Barums on it, two fronts down to 1.6mm and the rear around 2mm. I decided in which case it was a good idea to replace all four!
I went to about 5 different tyre places and couldn't find anywhere that stocked more than 2x 155/80 R13s. I had a bit of a think and played with a tape measure and a tyre calculator for 10 minuites and decided that there would be no serious issues fitting 165/70 R13's.
This meant the new tyres would be 10mm wider and have a slightly lower profile. The overall rolling radius would be around 17mm shorter or 3%. That means at 100mph the speedo would read 103mph. I could live with that!

I had a ring around a few places and the best deal I could find was a set of Maragoni E-Logics at £44 each at Kwik Fit. This included checking the wheel alignment FOC which needed doing as the front was out 2°, this was £45 to have adjusted which I thought was quite reasonable. But the icing on the cake is that a similar mid range tyre in her previous size would have been £60 a pop.

I drove out of KiwkFit and straight away the car felt much more solid, the roads were damp and it was obvious that the car just had MUCH more grip than it had previously.
I took it out onto the motorway and the car was quite happy at 70mph, on the standard tyre size it felt as though it was floating about, scarey infact at these speeds but all was well with the new tyres!
The car now inspires much more confidence than it did previously and actually made it into a bit of a go kart. A bit of a hoot to drive!
I always noticed that you never had enough front end grip to encourage any lift off oversteer, which is a shame as it uses a torsion bar rear setup. But now, chuck it into a corner with a bit of power on, let off and the back end slides around quite happily.
I'm rather impressed by the difference a simple set of tyres can make. It does make you wonder why Fiat wouldn't have opted for this size from the factory? :?

I had Maragoni's on my old Triumph Acclaim - they were made by a premium manufacturer and the tyre shop gave me a guarantee with them as long as I owned the car..!!

A very good tyre, I was throwing my Triumph around no problems.

I've heared that they are made by Continental, not sure how true that is. Reading some reviews about the Maragoni E-Logics online and it seems they aren't well regarded at all, infact I haven't seen any good reviews but with the new tyre size they seem to be much better than the 155/80 R13 Barums that were on there previously. It's nice knowing that not only has it massivley improved the handling charecteristics of the car but it's also made it much much safer!

I just think the 155 Section tyre is just too small for the tall Panda.

It's surprising how good cheapo tyres can be, but there does seem to be an element of pot-luck in it.
I like the rating system in blackcircles.com, and it really shows up some of the well-known brands.

I have three cheapos on now. The road noise is bad but otherwise no complaints.

80 profile is massive! What posessed them?

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

In all fairness Maragonis are a mid range tyre like a Falken or a Hankook. I don't think it's the tyre thats brilliant but more so the extra 10mm in tyre width and the slightly lower profile.
I even think a 70 profile is massive!

I just can't work out why Fiat didn't fit 165/70 R13's from the factory? They not only offer much more grip but they are also much cheaper too!

maragonis are made by continental as are barums, i've had barums before and found them to be a really good tyre, some tyres just suit a certain car better than others ,there is nothing wrong with most budget tyres most are made by the major manufactures just without the name.
i have a set off apollo tyres at the moment they are part of the vredestien group and are really good, in a recent independent test they beat the Michelin energy in almost every test ,so just goes to show you don't have to pay silly money for a set of tyres :)

My panda had bald tyres when i got it, i have no idea what type of tyre i put on it, but it definatley handled like a go cart, the city mode steering when it was turned on made it very twitchy but that just added to the fun.

You might want to inform your insurance co. I tried to change the size of tyre on the Volvo, same exercise as you and finding an 'equivalent' size, and my insurers threw a right fit! I didn't do it in the end.

They would only cover a tyre size approved by Volvo......e-mailed Volvo......Ooh no sir we can only recommend tyre sizes tested and approved by the factory.....

Then the insurance started asking if I was modifying the wheels/tyres/car :frown:

I like Fiat Pandas. My ex has one and it's a great little run-around - perfect for London traffic. Quite reliable too...

My little Panda had Continental EcoContacts when I got it. Brilliant fuel mileage, not so brilliant everything else.

I repurposed the stock 13" steel wheels for a set of 175/65R13 Michelin Alpin A3s and put a set of 14" alloys with 185/60R14 Michelin Energy Savers on it. Going to proper tyres made all the difference in the world.

Sort of like the Alpin A4s I put on the 406 this weekend. Absolutely stonking great tyre.

I'd suggest it's not the tyres, but rather the alignment which affected the handling...
