Snow socks/chains

Post by scotty73 »

Does anyone own or tried these? My street never gets gritted until a week after the snows gone and we've dug ourselves out... It don't have to be that bad here to struggle to get out of the street so was wondering if it was worth investing in either?

Pisses me off when the whole village is moving but we can't get up the street because some twat opposite has messed it up in his 4x4.

They look great on deep snow but I suspect the moment you touch tarmac they'll be in tatters.

Oops, I didn't notice the chains bit. I have a set, they went on the D8 at one point, great on snow but on tarmac it felt like I had 4 wheel bearings gone. If you do have chains then practice fitting them, the first time I needed them I couldn't make out how the f..k they fitted and gave up. I worked out how to fit them on a spare in the warm and dry, making notes on the (lousy) instructions, so when I did need them it only took a couple of minutes.

Okay but i will blame one 4x4 he spins just for the sake of it.

Steve the intended use would be to just get out of the street, soon as my front wheels touch tarmac they'll be off... I cant have my kids walking to school in the freezing because a stretch of snow stops me driving i need to protect their vocal chords for um... Up coming events.

How long is the street? Can't you just park on the main road when it starts to fall?

Work out how long it will take you to walk to the car vs putting chains on and off...

Wish it was that simple but people use our street to park when the main road is full in normal weather it's choc a block at the first hint of snow up there... Plus the knobheads aren't to be trusted.

Also i parked my old car up there one winter and wheen i went up to it the roads were clear but the snow plough had hidden my car i could only see from half way up the windscreen up to the roof... On the pavement side.

I'd keep an eye out for a couple of cheap spare rims and a couple of good used winter tyres and stick them on the front wheels, leave them on till the cold weather's gone and change them back and then keep them for next year.

You'll obviously need to stop it somewhere to take the socks/chains off!

Bluddy snow ploughs  Every year I clear all the snow then the plough comes and compacts it where I've just cleared it so I need a proper shovel to chip it all up again

Coincidently, last year I broke my shovel and then found everyone had sold out, so this year I've already been out and bought 3 (and one of them's all tricked out with interchangeable handles an' ting 8) )

As far as I remember you just undo all the clips/hooks and reverse out of them.

Yep the 4x4 in question the owners a knob he's seen people struggle and drives past in two wheel mode trying to zig zag all the way up the street... dai will tell you next to my house is a turn in on a bit of a hill but once he's made it icy nobody can turn into it and very often people get stuck down the bottom of the street.....Seems funny to him but it wasn't to me earlier in the year when i got rushed into hospital.

Two front snow tyres is an option i have two rims in my shed from when i changed to alloys...Will look very odd though.

I put 2 snow tyres on the front of my old 110 Rapier and I couldn't believe the difference it made,it was amazing.I've got snow tyres all round on my Executive mostly because it has ESP and I thought it would need evenish grip all round if it cut in,if it wasn't for that I'd probably just have the 2 on the front as worked well in that snow we had a few years ago.

Socks/chains are only any good on constant thick snow with no chance of Tarmac - Winter Tyres ALL ROUND are the way to go. I've had mine put on this afternoon and the car already feels nicer and more stable. There was another guy in the waiting room having his fitted too and the Manager said Winter Tyres have rocketed in popularity.

I'm a convert for sure and my barely worn Summers are now tucked up in my garage.

I can well remember the time when I was back in GB and the Astra I was driving was defeated by half an inch of snow on a slight incline, I certainly wouldn't want to go back to that sh*t.

Oooh, I dunno about that, true sock will probably instantly turn into confetti but the chains have more chance of damaging your tyres or the road surface than being damaged by the experience. Unless you do a couple of hundred miles on them but I'd think the tyres would probably give out first.
