Insurance Issues on a 1.6 French import

Post by geoffgeoffreys »

Hello all, I am new to this forum so apologies if this has come up before...... but I doubt it very much

I am the proud owner of a right hand drive, French Spec 406 GLX 1.6 petrol...... No you read right, 1.6 petrol, it takes great finesse and timing to accelerate out of junctions without getting wiped out! I even have the original French number plates.
I got it back in January from the estate of a 92 year old, who hadn't done many miles in it, only 4072 in the 12 years he owned it.... It's called 'scratchy' for good reason, but it runs perfectly fine.

The problem I have is that my insurance policy is extortionate, as it's classed as a 'grey' import. This spec of car never existed in the UK as it was a French specific engine size. As such I cannot go to any of the online insurance websites to get quotes, I have to go to a broker. This essentially means I pay more for the insurance annually than I did for the car. I love the car and am going to run it for a good few years yet.

Does anyone know of an insurance company that could be cheaper or classify it in a different way?

Thanks

PLEASE post up some pics of the car, that would be great.

Try 'Prestige' as advertised here, you really need a specialist who understands you're not trying to pull a fast one (no pun intended).

We always wondered what the 1.6 would be like so this is fascinating :cheesy:

There are lots of online insurance companies specialising in insurance for imported cars.

As mentioned already try the one listed here first.
