Exhaust Repair
The exhaust middle section on my D9 HDI has been blown for some time.
On the pipe where it curves towards the rear box.
I've kept on 'fixing' it with exhaust bandage, gun gum, and also had a
go with that Holts sleeve thing that you fasten round the pipe.
I would have fitted a new section by now, just the weather has been
too wet for scrabbling, and knuckle grazing, around underneath.
None of the fixes lasted long, a few days usually.
Anyway, I tried another tack. Got some aluminium adhesive
tape, and wrapped some of that round the pipe. Then some
high-temperature repair tape.., the kind that cures and bonds with itself.
That was a week ago. Checked underneath this afternoon. Looks as
good as new.

Re: Exhaust Repair
I'll be getting a new centre exhaust section shortly.
But just thought I'd check my repair to see how it's coming along.
Popped my head underneath this afternoon. Still perfect.

Re: Exhaust Repair
awesome stuff! any chance you could find some links for the tapes you used, so we know what works?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

The self-bonding tape I used, I had already, Quik Tape brand

Same stuff ( see temperature range 260 degrees C / 500 degrees F), different brand...

Search on the bay for 'exhaust repair tape' brings most of these up.

Re: Exhaust Repair
Might be of interest to you/ might not but a few weeks back my rear silencer went so i phoned everywhere local and the cheapest i could find was 40 notes, upon checking the bay i found one for 32 quid and went for it.
Ordered it 12.30pm on the Monday it got here 11am the following day (from Scotland)
cracking service fair play..And it only cost me a tenner to have fitted.
...Here's the linky to the sellers page.

Re: Exhaust Repair
Thanks for that. The rear silencer also looks quite scabby, so that will probably
be up for replacement too.

The connection to the Back Box:

See how the careless owner here 'rattle canned' some Red Oxide in a fruitless attempt at limiting the corrosion

Re: Exhaust Repair
Update. Yesterday afternoon, I took the plunge.
I bought rear silencer, Bosal brand. From reading around it seems to be
a little better quality than the Klarius ones.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141176480427? ... 1439.l2649
Also centre section....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331064217496? ... 1439.l2649
From the seller of the Rear box, I soon received a text to say delivery would be today.
At 8.30 this morning I received another text to say delivery would be between 09.40 and 10.40.
At 10.00 the courier man arrived.
From Eurocarparts, for the centre section,I received the eBay despatch notice.
Item arrived about an hour ago.
Very well pleased.
The welds, as seems to be usual, all bare. I've painted them, and seams, with Hammerite paint.
Won't do anything about 'inside-out' rusting, but bare welds..... aargh.
Now for a dry day .
