Well after 15 years of Peugeot ownership
309 gti goodwood
306s16
406v6 coupe

It was time to move on and try something new, as my car isn't the main car and I only do circa 2k a year fuel bills etc arnt a problem.

The search list was small but was a mix of German and jap rear wheel drive cars.

The car in question is

Rear wheel drive
4 door
Six speed
Normaly aspirated
231 bhp




Has a few things to sort like the wheels but on the hole it's a good car

That 9000rpm rev limit is amazing as is the noise it makes whilst getting there

Very nice RX-8! I've always been quite keen on the styling of those.

Aren't the engines on those quite keen on lunching themselves? Oil starvation issues, etc?

I've read many a post on Pistonheads where someone's re-engined one whose engine has already bit the dust, and quite a few people have said the Wankel engine it uses doesn't have a particularly long service life. Shame, cos the rotary engine idea seems to be really clever to me.

It's stuff like that that's put me off having one of them, rather than anything else. The rear "suicide" doors are a really good idea and work well.

Have a very good look at the handbrake, if you thought the 406 handbrake has a bad reputation, these are much worse....I've seen a few of these roll away downhill, including one owned by a customer which she just bought, parked it on her steep drive and lost it down the drive into a wall at the other side of the road!

Keep a regular check on the oil!!

Yes they engines use oil but no more than some other cars and if liked after can do well in to the 100k catagory

They do need regular maintance though!!

Those RX's are mega cheap because everyone is scared of them, make a bargain if you get a good 'un.

Something I learnt watching Wheeler Dealers last week was that the rotor tips wear due to the centrifugal forces against the 'cylinder' walls, increasing the revs increases the wear they kinda wear themselves out. I think you can look after engines like that by being sympathetic and using super-quality oil.

I didn't park it like that, the guy I purchased it from did whilst I got him so e cash from the bank.

It's very common amongst club members to add some fully synthetic 2 stroke oil to your petrol, this burns clean but also aids lubrication of the rotor tips at the same time .

Also a lot of people run 10w40 rather than 10w30 which is the recommended oil

Plenty of people on the forums with high Milage cars that haven't has a rebuild!

Once I get the drive back properly it will be getting a good service and the mods can start getting done

This is what did for NSU, the maker of the original rotary, the NSU Ro 80. The rotor tips were failing at low mileages, and NSU faithfully replaced the engines under warranty.., until they were effectively bust. ( VW took them over, and they became what is now Audi )

Mazda did address the tip failurs, many rx8 on well over 75000 miles without a rebuild.

It's common practice these days to run a small amount of fully synthetic two stroke in the petrol to help keep things lubricated.

Any way have finally had chance to clean it , clay bar, two coats of autoglym Srp, coat of poor boys black hole, and shortly it will get a cost of nattys blue wax





Have a rotary v badge to fit on the front

but it needs a bit of work so is presently sat in primer.

Then it will be on the wheels which are getting painted PEUGEOT graphite grey (have to get a bit of French on it)

And here is the coupe being taken away, think I got all the good bits off it !!

Depends when it was first registered. eg a V6 registered before 1/4/01 will be £230 per year.

Yep that's the spark plugs, you access them via the passenger side front wheel arch!!
Other two are too the left as you look at that image !!

Also discovered that it needs a new passenger side droplink

I worked for mazda for around 3 years while the rx8 was new.
Pretty good cars.
1ltr of oil every 1000mile is what mazda say. Common faults are intercooler oil pipes corroding.
Drop links snap for fun.
and the most common is people flooding the engine and then the car wont start again. Thi is causef by people not turning off the engine correctly.
sounds daft but there is a set procedure for stoppingvthe engine. I have got somewhere a little book direct from mazfa on how this all works if its anygood to you??
