Yatour mp3 in the Yoyo

Post by steve_earwig »

You must have seen these on the bay of E, alongside the rather pricey Connects 2 and Xcarlink USB mp3 adaptors they're about half the price but look more-or-less the same. The trouble was I'd got no idea if they were any good. I wanted to get one for the D9 but as I don't seem to be driving it much I thought it would be better to get one for the yoyo to try - if it blew it up I would then have an excuse to buy a decent stereo for it anyway. In for a penny, in for 40 quid...

Image
After checking which CD changer port it had this is what I bought http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271461576521? ... 1439.l2649 along with this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261215168062? ... 1439.l2649 because, during my investermagations I found that I couldn't just unplug the existing connector from the CD changer port as half the dash would go dead. I could've just spliced it I guess but I couldn't be asked to play about with the fiddly little wires they use on Japanese cars - why use a big wire when you can get away with one as thin as a hair?
Image
The unit is kind of the size of a fag packet, about a centimetre wider, thinner, the same length plus the connector (which looks suspiciously like a D-sub)

First carefully remove the stereo:

Locate the CD changer port & unplug the existing connector:

Plug in the spice, then the existing connector & Yatour lead:
Image
And shove it all roughly behind the dash.

Fire it up:
Image
Well bugger me, it works! The instructions say to label the folders on the memory stick "CD01, CD02.....CD99", I numbered the 5 I put on the disk a bit randomly but it still numbered them on the display CD01 to CD05. Owing to the stereo I can't scan about on the CDs with the traditional "bip, bop, bap, boop" of bits of the music, just a beep to say it's doing it, silence until I release the button and then it starts playing again. I've no idea if it'd do this in the Pug. Otherwise it seems to function as a CD changer should.

Where to mount it? Within the half a meter of the cable I couldn't find a convenient place to stick it, it's all curves and weird shapes in the yoyo. I did think of sticking it to the side of the centre console but I thought it might get in the way, or in the cubby hole under the steering column but I could imagine it falling out on my feet all the time. In the end I sacrificed the ask tray:
Image
Ooops, it's upside-down. Oh dear, how sad, never mind. While I had that panel out I noticed that both the ashtray and fag lighter have bulbs but, like most of the dash, they've blown and aren't replaceable without buying the whole unit, stuff that. I also packed a load of foam behind the panel to stop it vibrating all the time.

Incidentally, owing to most of the screws for the stereo being behind the level of the dash there's endless scope for dropping them behind the dash - clink, clunk, bugger :frown: And also plenty of fragile little clips to shatter while you're looking for them - crunch, oh for fu*k's sake!

This is just for Welly because he wanted a pic of the sloppy repair I did on the leather steering wheel:

Very interesting.

Be good to know how it works in a full-mux late D9 - if 'anyone' has access to one of these and an appropriate pug.

I probably gave the game away mentioning dropping the screws down the back of the dash :supafrisk:

Mine appears to be on the list http://www.ycarlink.com/pd_10531_Digita ... an-bus.htm but it's a PU-2473 A(J), maybe the only difference is it's silver, dunno. The Yatour box itself seems to be the same, just the lead changes. Sadly nobody seems to sell just the lead...

You'd think of all the times I've had the stereo out of it I'd have thought to take a picture of the connectors on the back  http://www.c5club.cz/files/pdf/rd3pinout.pdf Still, I guess it's overdue a drive...

Those wires are tiny!

They keep banging on about an mp3 player interface thingy on the Volvo Forum, mine can't play electronical music data and this thing's got a 9V battery frigged-up to some bollocks thing I dunno....I can't be arsed with it and don't have an mp3 player anyway

Oh sorry, it's not the mp3 I'm using, I just said mp3 because.... I'm stupid. I'm using a USB mammary stick (64Gig  Like what it says it won't work with in the small print which I didn't see until this afternoon while I was looking for the above links :? ). I do have an mp3 player but I use that for gardening (so I get to be rude to the neighbours and not hear the mozzies that no amount of repellent can, er, repel because the bastards just bite me through my clothes anyway so I don't bother with the stuff any more, plus I can kill my mental processes with loud D&B so I don't think about how bored/hot/sweaty/tired I am).

Steve,
Not sure exactly what the steering wheel repair involved but can I point out that you put it back on the wrong side of the car!

BTW My splitting maul would be a far more appropriate tool for stereo removal if you want to borrow it any time :cheesy:

Yep, I must admit it's on the wrong side on this, but it's the right side for the Pug...

Thanks for the offer but I already have one, plus 2 cast iron splitting wedges for those awkward to remove trim panels... :supafrisk:

Sounds to me like another corner for the forum, I can imagine the posts already;

'I can't get wood, can anybody help?'
'Best place to get hard wood?'

I suspect Google would may direct a few confused visitors to the forum tho :cheesy:

When my mother in law gave me wood a few weeks ago I was straight round her house and had my large chopper out in the back garden.
After much grunting and sweating she was very pleased with my efforts but I did have to stop a few times for a little sit down and a ciggie.

I wasn't paying too much attention but it sounded like 9V battery-in-a-box.......frig up to aerial receiver (shark fin thing on roof).....run a lead to the front of cabin (which takes about 4 years and destroys everything in its path) and then toon-in your FM receiver head yewknit to 'pick up' what you're playing on the thingummy-bob I think you can plug your i-Phone into it.
