Moderns pushing out 18 volts

Post by Welly »

Chatting to my mechanic earlier (whilst having my expensive oil change) and he was telling me that modern cars with 'smart' alternators are capable of dishing out 18 volts when at full load.........lots of customers have been hooked up via jump leads from moderns 'helping out' but actually sending 18 volts to your car when the donor vehicle 'sees' the load imposed on it. This has seen many ECU's burnt out already so be warned, don't get a jump from a new car as it could kill yours.

He pulled an airbag ECU out the bin to show me where a Focus had jumped a van in a car park last week and f*cked it up.

That's about the size of it, they may as well padlock your bonnet shut now. BMW don't think you need a dipstick anymore so you don't get one, instead you get a sensor cos that's better that is.....

How come 18 volts doesn't destroy the electrics on the car?

Don't be silly. It's impossible for German cars to go wrong because if they did then they wouldn't make them that way.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Most of them seem to have a dipstick behind the wheel.......
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Ha, spot on! I've been toying with the idea of getting one of those portable jump starters, something like this...

Edit: Actually reading the reviews this one looks a better prospect!
1996 406 1.8LX Got a bad case of hydro lock!
1996 406 Executive 2.0 Turbo XU10J2TE No longer hangin' on in there :(
1997 Honda CB500V
2003 Volvo V40 1.8 GDi SE killed by a nutter in a beemer 5 series
