Anyone reccomend a VAG code reader?

As above really, I know you can get generic code readers but I suspect they won't be too accurate. This is for a mate's Škoda Rustavia, 2005 I think. I know there are all sorts of readers on ebay that purport to be VAG_COM or VCDS but I read that results can vary from doesn't actually work to damages the car Must be cheap as chips as he ain't got a pot to wee in and last time it went wrong (they do that?) it cost him a kidney just for the diagnostics, and that's after 3 monkeys already came out and failed to diagnose a damn thing with their generic cod raiders...

I have a fairly inexpensive handheld reader for VAG stuff its one of these:

I bought it the time my uncles golf displayed the EML light and it diagnosed the coolant temperature sensor, in one go it paid for itself, i have since used it on an A6 with a faulty crankshaft position sensor, an octavias ABS sensor, it can even read airbag codes, and I've had it find out what bulb was blown on a touran. For the price it was hard to beat. I don't understand all that other Vagcom vcds stuff there is too many different prices for it on ebay, mostly the lite version. I dont know if the dealer software can be bought off ebay like PP2000 can.

Thanks for that Frank, unfortunately they're yet another seller that won't post outside the UK Maybe I need to check for something in Germany

I did find some stuff that was meant to work (included a "lite" version, so maybe that's what you've seen) but it was starting to look stupidly expensive. Or I could download some version of the software for zilch ( I can see it on the torrents), buy one of these things off ebay and then maybe it'll work Yeah, ok, thankyou, goodbye

I think steve if you try searching for VAG Pro Scan, it will find the same device from other sellers, they might be able to offer postage to you.

I didn't think the octavias had a rust problem?

I did try sticking a few permutations into the search box yesterday but I couldn't see anyone else selling that one (V500) even searching EU-wide:

Maybe I should just order that one to my bro's and get t'wife to pick it up, she's there later this month. I'm trying not to weigh her down with car parts, knowing her she'll have already weighed herself down with shoes...

Neither did I (I try not to get that close to them as a rule), it was just a comedy name alternative to the more usual craptavia.

No, of course they don't, all those thousands of VAG code reader sellers on ebay are angling for that one unlucky owner who gets some trivial fault on his otherwise perfect UberWagen.

Oh no, in the typical germanic manner said bulb was illuminating fine but the car was still registering a fault
